As you might recall, the way to hunt 'em out here is in pairs.  One has a good .22 rifle & t'other is the better wingshot & has the "twice time Cajun carbine" AKA a 20 guage double gun.

You should come out & refresh yer memories.  The roads are fun too.

I went on one western grouse hunt.  We drove the road slowly and would stop about 8 foot from the birds sitting on branches.  I was trying head shots with a 22 revolver (solids), shots under 10 yards.  You usually got 2 or 3 shots before those retarded birds decided to jump to another tree slightly further away.

Just not the same species as our Pennsylvania birds.  Pa Ruffed grouse are in thick cover, usually crucification thorns.  They also prefer a steep hillside so you can't get both feet planted for shooting.  Then the don't hold tight but like to flush about 20 yards away and fly behind trees as zig-zagging thru the thickest stuff.  If you connect and get a good puff of feathers, then in death they hide their bodies in crevices in multi color brown/red fall leaves.

Really not the same.  I've never tried a pistol with bird shot.  After hiking and fighting my way thorough grouse thickets and only getting 3-4 flushes all day, and only seeing 1 and a half birds flush....I want to be properly armed!

I finally stopped shooting those timberdoodles.  They are fun to shoot, but I just can't eat them any longer.

Last fall I got one, cleaned it immediately in the field.  Then i took it home soaked it over night in non-iodine salt with a little lemon juice.

First thing in the morning, I envisioned two eggs over with the breast of woodcock and Italian toast.

Made the bird with white wine and lemon with some fresh sliced thin apple strips.

The bird tasted like eating Berkley's Gulp.  I couldn't eat it.  just terrible flavor.  A waste of those apple strips.  I needle Listerine to get the taste oout of my mouth.

So fly free you might migration bird of the uplands.

PS Maybe the mighty TAS has recipe that makes them taste better?

I don't hunt birds as much as I should anymore, don't really know why either.  Just get kinda locked in on big game & forget the birds I guess. 

I'll pick up a copy of the bird regs.  But I'll swear on a stack of bibles that when it comes to fool hens, sometimes to shoot 'em on the wing would mean you'd have to walk over to it, pick it up, and throw it into the air.  Would you have to wait till the shotgunner calls PULL!!  Just wonderin'.
