So many people carry autos for CCW these days.  Just wondering how many of you guys that have an auto CCW also have extra clips?  and do you always carry and extra clip, never carry and extra or occasionally carry and extra clip??

Just was wondering!

Bear;

I have several extra magazines & rotate their use with the gun.  However, I rarely carry the gun and more magazines.

I figure that if I can't get outta whatever situation befalls me with the ammo in the gun, I was being particularly stupid at the time.  I try not to be stupid.  Besides, the current gun holds more than twice the ammo that the revolver I had been carrying held.

Jsg...does your holster have provisions for the spare mag?

Nope, but they make extra clip pouches for every type. I generally just use the stuff it in my lower back approach and use my back pocket as I'm in and out all day

I carry a .45 and one extra eight round magazine. I carry the .380 I carry three extra seven round magacines. If I carry the 9mm then I get by with one extra 13 rounder for back-up. But since you never know how long it will take for the cavalry to show up, it's best not to start what you can't finish quickly, so I guess the extra ammunition is just so I don't walk in circles.

When I carry my 10mm semi I carry 1 extra 8 round
magazine.

When I carry my 10mm revolver I carry 2 extra moon clips
of 6 rounds each.

When I throw my airweight in my pocket I usually have 1
extra speed loader.

.....funny thinkin about it now.....I have speed loaders for my .357 but never use them, they just sit on the shelf full of defense loads. I use it mainly for bird hunting in the tight thickets and it's great for that, but never had the need for speed when using it for hunting purposes

IBD you are taking the limited recent media definition of "CLIP".  Look to any 25 year old catalog, and clip feed 22 rifles are every where.

You are taking the position that only stripper clips and M1 enbloc clips are "clips".  a device that hjold live rounds of ammo for insertion into a repaeting firearm is a "clip".  You also probably believe the Mule myth that revolvers are not pistols, as only auto (loading) hanguns are pistols.

I have speed strips for 38sp, they're easier to slip in pocket/carry, than speedloaders.  I also carry 380, as a last ditch backup, no extra mag.

.357 birdshot is only good for inside 20 yds. on grouse, bunnies and woodcock. I like hunting tight thickets of thornapple and cranberry.
not much chance of a long shot in there!

But jsg, I have only seen it in 12 shot. Any grouse I have ever seen will take a load of #12's and come back and flap you to death before they leave. At least that's what Pa grouse will do. Maybe if loaded with # 7's it would be better, and I HAVE bought the shot capsuals and loaded them, but never with anything bigger that 12's. The idea sounds interesting to a quick draw guy, and I sure would like to try it............................Kingpin

Me and Bear have had this discussion before, but I have been carrying a revolver for the last several years. I don't carry a reload, but I do have more ammo in the house and every vehicle that I might be driving. Not exactly handy, but it is there.

Last week I bought a S&W Shield. That is their compact semi auto. I got one in 9mm. I plan on carrying it when I am at work or at home. I think that will be times when it doesn't matter if its a revolver or a semi auto. I will have 8 rounds instead of the 5 I have in a J frame S&W. I don't plan on carrying an extra magazine. I will have extra ammo kinda close by.

I will still carry a revolver when I am on the road and in the woods.

Actually #6 shot seems to carry best. capsules are available in .429 and .45 as well...(.22) is pretty much worthless

I use to carry some 357 Yellow plastic shot capsules in my Blackhawk, for snakes.  Found that when BIG water snakes attacked (and they do believe me and Jimmy Carter on this) the 357 shot cartridges were not stoppers, even at very close range.  If hit with the pattern close it would blow off some flesh, but not kill the snakes.  When to the 9mm S&W with hollow points and while it might take 2 shots, it cut the head right off (2 pieces of wiggle).

Now with a 410  I can kill grouse.  the 20 with imp.cylinder seems the best to me.

+1 on the sitting grouse

.45 colt with heavy load of #6-8 will do as good as .410 2 1/2", out of a much shorter and easily to use format in tight,(my god I'm crawling through it), brush, with a moderate charge behind it. I've had great success with the little .357 on woodcocks inside 20', but seriously, there isn't much to a woodcock. Grouse in laurel and power lines, go with the .45 colt

Jsg;

As you might recall, the way to hunt 'em out here is in pairs.  One has a good .22 rifle & t'other is the better wingshot & has the "twice time Cajun carbine" AKA a 20 guage double gun.

You should come out & refresh yer memories.  The roads are fun too.

Easterners we kick em up instead of shooting on a nest. Illegal to shoot any bird on the ground or water, except turkeys here. It's considered un-sportsmen like conduct. Turkeys have to be out of the roost and before 12:00 noon, actually out of the woods before 12:00 noon. .22's are great for bunnies and squirrels......and even fall turkey season when it's legal to use a rifle.

I went on one western grouse hunt.  We drove the road slowly and would stop about 8 foot from the birds sitting on branches.  I was trying head shots with a 22 revolver (solids), shots under 10 yards.  You usually got 2 or 3 shots before those retarded birds decided to jump to another tree slightly further away.

Just not the same species as our Pennsylvania birds.  Pa Ruffed grouse are in thick cover, usually crucification thorns.  They also prefer a steep hillside so you can't get both feet planted for shooting.  Then the don't hold tight but like to flush about 20 yards away and fly behind trees as zig-zagging thru the thickest stuff.  If you connect and get a good puff of feathers, then in death they hide their bodies in crevices in multi color brown/red fall leaves.

Really not the same.  I've never tried a pistol with bird shot.  After hiking and fighting my way thorough grouse thickets and only getting 3-4 flushes all day, and only seeing 1 and a half birds flush....I want to be properly armed!

I carry a short barreled 870 or the .357. Reason for taking kids and dogs is so an old man like me doesn't literally have to crawl through the thick stuff. I managed to shoot 3 woodcock this year with the little .357 between 7 and 12 feet. A big gun in the thorn-apples is a real problem

I finally stopped shooting those timberdoodles.  They are fun to shoot, but I just can't eat them any longer.

Last fall I got one, cleaned it immediately in the field.  Then i took it home soaked it over night in non-iodine salt with a little lemon juice.

First thing in the morning, I envisioned two eggs over with the breast of woodcock and Italian toast.

Made the bird with white wine and lemon with some fresh sliced thin apple strips.

The bird tasted like eating Berkley's Gulp.  I couldn't eat it.  just terrible flavor.  A waste of those apple strips.  I needle Listerine to get the taste oout of my mouth.

So fly free you might migration bird of the uplands.

PS Maybe the mighty TAS has recipe that makes them taste better?

the only way to shoot grouse is with a nice double gun or even an O/U but in 20ga or maybe a 28ga for the best fun.....ON THE WING.....use my dog to fetch them (when I can hit them that is)....keeps me outa the brambles and thorns.

Bear;

I don't hunt birds as much as I should anymore, don't really know why either.  Just get kinda locked in on big game & forget the birds I guess.

I'll pick up a copy of the bird regs.  But I'll swear on a stack of bibles that when it comes to fool hens, sometimes to shoot 'em on the wing would mean you'd have to walk over to it, pick it up, and throw it into the air.  Would you have to wait till the shotgunner calls PULL!!  Just wonderin'.
