Topic: Zero vs. effective pointing rangePosted: 06 January 2004 at 01:35 |

Zero can be set to the distance you shoot your game at normally, however since most game is shot fairly close up (or at least you can't eliminate the ability of a close shot) you should always know where it's hitting up close. Because of this I like knowing the range in which I can hold the cross hair on my aim point and still hit the kill zone (3 to 5" circle). Since like a idiot I forgot what that region is called I didn't put it in the subject, what I meant by the subject was the range in which you can hold the cross hairs dead on and kill with confidence. Anyway, I try to pick a zero that will ensure I'm in the kill zone all the way out to my target, and I will accept a zero that's off for my "desired" zero of about 2" and no more. I choose my zero's kind of goofy, but I thought it were use to talkin' 'bout. Even after i've finally choose my zero point, I shoot at each range to verify the impact points instead of rely'n on the charts. Nothin' beats confidence in the rifle, except maybe flinchin' when yer pullin the trigger. Spot

Spot,
Your thinking of point blank range. Just about any normal centerfire will do ok with a 200 zero IMO. My .223 works out well with a 200 zero, 1.25 high at 100, and 9 low at 300. Quite a drop compared most, but my scope has a 3moa center section, so the point of the verticle stylus is my 300 point. I had to laugh at a counter guy one time, he was bragging about his 300 win mag and having a 300 yard zero. He also laughed at the deer he lost because he was stupid and shot over ots back at 100 yards. I walked away laughing too, only at him. My .22's get set at 25/40 with normal, then same setting is dead on at 100 with stingers, good coverage. |
