For your drooling pleasure

This bull was killed in the Yukon on 9-25. Elk were put in there in 1958 from Yellowstone Park. This was the first year they have been hunted. They drew for 15 permits.
The hunter is Al Klassen.
He's been a sheep guide in the Yukon and Northwest Territories and has personally guided over 100 Dall Ram kills.
Preliminary gross score... 451 5/8

Man.  Nothing like a little rest for an area to improve the herd.  America has too many outfitters relying on elk herds.  Relaxing the war zone for a spell would be great, but politically impossible.

If an area hasn't been hunted in last fifty years, I would call that more than a little rest period.  Those $50,000 AZ/NM hunts seem to "help" improve the herd also.

It's all relative.  When only stone age hunters were pressuring the herds, I bet those kind of drooler bulls were common place.  10 years of no hunting would probably restore an area, but you gotta consider that the gene pool is also thinned.  Takes time for an area to reach its peak.  I bet 50 years isn't such a long time in the grand scheme of things.  That's probably 10 generations of elk.

I remember when Arizona was no good for elk.  They did recover the apache herds quickly through management.  There's some huge bulls in Michigan, nothing like that Yukon bull, but pretty nice.  Those elk have been there a while.
