  What is the low down with youth hunting in Mt.  The laws seem to read that 12 years is where the youth start. Surely I am misunderstanding something.  We have no age limit on hunters here and have lots of kids at age 7 or 8 who are serious little hunters.  Once they take their hunters ed. course they can buy liscense.  If they can't read well enough to take the course and get a youth lisc. they can hunt on their own property.  Everyone in Ind. Ohio,Kentucky, seem to learn to squirrel hunt at very young ages.  What exactly can a kid under 12 years of age hunt in MT.  twodot

  I imagine a kid can shoot any critter that doesn't require a license, rabbits, squirrels, varmints etc.

Twodot;

Yup, gophers, badgers, & coyotes too.  Gophers for marksmanship & coyotes for hunting skills.

  So you can not take say a 9 or ten year old hunting for anything that requires a license?  Even on private ground? so a kid must be 12 years old to be considered youth?  but they are good to go for gophers, dogs, badger, coyote, rabbit, but can't go on fox, bcat, and coons because they are considered furbearers?  I might be in big trouble with my boys.  thanks guys,  twodot

that ain't right, my boy has hunted with me since he was 7yo, he's 16 now, but wouldn't trade him for any other hunting partner! lucky there ain't any limits in Texas, wonder how many next generation hunters are lost because of that stupid law?

Pennsylvania is 12 for anything.  they are starting to think about some younger ages.

Some states are 14.  I've been asked by hunters in those states "WoW, why do they let 12 year olds go out sith guns".

Seems to be culture thing.

2007-03-18_105945_Ben&Nash&Dad&Deer.jpg  Good point Crazy. I bet that there have been a lot of potential hunters lost to other interests due to not being able to tag along with ol" dad at young ages. Mine started very young, but we do lots of range work here at the house and they have been raised up with zero tolerance to gun foolishness.  They have  never even been allowed to point toy guns at each other.  I have been teaching hunter's ed. for about 20 years and would rather see a parent take time and trouble to get an 8 year old started right than let their 13-14 year old take the course at school and then turn em loose.  The little guys take instruction more seriously and require more attention due to physical limitations and that requires everyone to  just slow down and enjoy the time in the field.    Both of mine started hunting squirrel in 04. I of course carried the rifle. One year ago the oldest then 9 got his first turkey, and this past season his first and second deer.Their favorite game is still squirrel and coon. {They like working their dog} I would encourage everyone to take time to take some little folks hunting and make it a point to teach them better than how we ourselves learned.
