Just an annual report. Over the last three year, my two brothers and I have been working on the son-in-laws, sons, nephews and grandsons to get them started in big game hunting. Last year we got three guys their first deer, and two guys there first buck. This has meant buying some youth rifles. In the past three years we have added new Rem model 7 in 7-08, a Ruger 270 (used but like new), and a Savage 340 in 30-30 used and I shortened the stock, but shoots sub MOA.
Last year we added a new Remington M700 youth 243 with a 3-9x scope, mount, sling and caps ($399 NIM). We need two new ones this year. And we tried to get the M700 package on sale again. Couldn’t find them. But this year's new two youth rifles are: --- M11FG Savage in 243 Winchesters, complete with slings, 3-9x scopes, caps, gun locks, and certificate for a factory full size stock (good for 50% discount). Bargain NIB $349. Couldn’t pass them up. Our criteria are NO exposed hammers, scope of about 3x, in light kicking cartridges that will drop a deer stone dead at 200 yards or less. Less you think that the 30-30 doesn’t fall into that 200 yard class, the 11 year old got his doe at 181 yards with one shot, and it fell over and never moved from a heart shot. Just thoughts I though I’d pass along for those looking for youth model rifles. BEAR Edited by BEAR |

All good choices for a youth rifle. can't fault a one. I let my biddies 12 year old daughter hunt with my Model77MK2 RL in .257 Roberts last year, but I missed it ! She did,nt get a buck though. This year I am gonna take 2 rifles that would be good for the purpose. The Roberts again and My little #1A in 7X57 mauser. the stocks are a little long but both would make great rifles for a youth. You could cut an inch off the stock then in a few years add a 1 inch pad and they would fit again...tj3006 |

This year my younger brother and I sat smoking a cigar and having a "splash" of vodka on Thursday evening. Subject was how many and what we "could use". the interesting part is both of your rifles were suggested. I have an 1A Ruger in 7x57 and a Ruger 77 in 257 Roberts. I thumb-down those, because the stocks are too long and the barrel on the 257 while it is ultra thin, is long and makes the OAL to long for the younger kids. We will be shooting these with the two "new" boys (ages 12 and 9) at least two boxes of shells a week all summer in prep for the Oct North Carolina deer trip. We have tried to emphasis that accuracy is ALL THAT MATTERS. We force the single shot loading on all the kids guns. So they know they only get one chance....make it good. 3 years ago we had one boy (youngest) miss 4 shots on the 4 day hunt. Last year he is the same kid that connected with the 30-30 at 181 yards. Maturity helps. Also some people need to have the "buck fever" once before they can settle down when they see game. The reason not to use my 7mm Ruger is it has XXXX wood and I'm not about to cut any of it off....it is the rifle that will go in the casket with me. If I would have had a preference I'd have purchased 250-3000 chambers. I think it is a great round and perfect for kids to grow with. Light recoil and can shoot the 120 grain bullets as they get bigger/older/more experienced. But the 243 is a close second. We start with 80 grain light loads and work up to full power 100 grainers by hunting season IF the kids can handle it. With light loads and accurate shooting the guns kill deer. Deer are really easy to kill IF hit correctly (no magnum needed). We killed lots of deer with kids shooting 30 cal with 125 grain bullets moving at 1900 fps (using down loaded 308, 30-40, and 30-30). Looking forward to a good fall with the young ones. BEAR |

i'm having an ass-kicking of a time finding a gun for my daughter. trying to get her geared up for big game this year, and we've discovered she needs a lefty bolt... so far, we're looking at savage, browning, and tikka. while i like none of the three, i can't find anything else - and that leaves browning the front runner... the gun must be factory available in 308 - thus eliminating ruger and remington. thoughts? Ya what he said ? Pumps and levers are good for leftys too. Funny thing about the wife's lefty thing. You guys remember a few months back when I thought we were looking for a lefty ? Momma put the stop to that,we went everywhere looking for leftys and she held and worked a bunch ,she couldn't find one rifle she liked as well as her Browning A-Bolt in righty.
Except she did get warm a fuzzy over a Browning Lighting lever in 7mm-08,but she wouldn't commit to it. She she likes her rifle and she didn't want to hear no more about it. Who turns down a new rifle.

Ray; They musta changed the mix since you were on. The only real blonde I saw was Irlene Mandrell, who is nice looking alright, just not in the rotating picture box. I do hope the photographer who took the shot of the white rhino was using a long lens, preferably from the back of a fast vehicle. 900F |

Bear, I must ask, why no exposed hammers? I started off my hunting with a single shot Savage 20 gauge and never had an AD. I have only had 1 AD, and that was with a Remington 870 of all things. I started rabbit hunting when I was 12 if I remember correctly. Deer hunting I started with a Ruger 96/44. Neat little gun. Lever action, cross button safety, 4 rounds of 44 mag, loaded chamber indicator and nice and light. No wonder I love levers so much

Nothing wrong with exposed hammer guns, I've got a few. But with small kids it is an unnecessary risk. The risk is that most hammers are sh*t. so you better get an extension or some thig that grabs you finger. If you mount a scope it shrouds the hammer. Small kids (and many adults) can't lower the hammer safely once it is cocked. Add the excitement of the hunt and it is a unnecessary safety risk. BeAR |

Bear, my Roberts is the RL model (ultra light) it has a 20 inch tube. They make it in .243 too, An ultra light ruger in .243 would be dandy, for a youth rifle. I would like to get a .308 RL myself. ...tj3006 |

The Ruger Ultr would make a perfect youth, assume you cut the stock to fit. I've handled and shot the Ruger Ultra...it is really light. And remember that my deer rifle is a 5# Kimber in 260 Remington, so I'm use to light. Just curious, my Roberts is on a long Ruger 77 tang action. Did or does Ruger make a short action length or do they just block the mag and limit the bolt throw on a standard '06 length action? My Kimber is a very short and very small diamet bolt to save weight, same as my L579 Sako 243. I never thought much of the 257 Roberts on a short action, especially if the barrel has a long throat. I often recomment a used gun in 250-3000 as a starter. Savage 99 made many of them and they work well for lefties. BEAR Edited by BEAR |

Don't have much experience with "youth" rifles. When I was a kid, we used the full-size guns, namely that Winchester Model 70 30-06 I had re-barreled. Sure, fit was poor and the thing seemed to weigh a ton when you're only about 4 1/2 ft. tall but hey it worked. For what it's worth, I think the idea of a full size rifle with a youth stock is a good idea. That way you can "upgrade" to a full size stock later. As far as calibers go, I think the short action calibers dominate for a youth deer rifle. The 243 Winchester is a popular caliber but I'm still leery of it, namely due to my experience with it. Bullet performance was always iffy with standard bullets. I once made a perfect broadside shot on an average size doe at under 100 yards and the thing ran off - something I don't particularly care for. Sure, it can even happen with a heart shot with a 300 Win. Mag. but the "autopsy" showed poor penetration through the shoulder, never exiting. Had I used something like a Barnes or a bonded style, things MIGHT have been different. Nope, I think the 257 Roberts, 260 Rem., the 6.5 X 55, 7 X57 and 308 (parent to many short action calibers) have something going for them over the 243. As far as them having more recoil for young shooters, perhaps but unless you get a fatter case, there's only so much powder you can stuff in a short action cartridge and thus recoil is limited (figuring stock and barrel dimensions on a level playing field). I think either of your choices would work just fine Ursus. |
