Mr. Kingpin - Mine's also an older Remington 700 in .308 Win. This was my very first centerfire rifle. It started out as a BDL with sites. I parted company with it around 1999 and was lucky enough to get it back late last year. It now has a custom ADL style checkered stock. I didn't/don't shoot it enough, obviously as it still has the original barrel [sites now removed]. Here's a pic of it [now topped with an older Leupold VariX-II 3-9x40mm.

She's a keeper & will be the last one I ever sell. Am hoping to find the time to shoot more over this season, once I get things going on my 'loading bench again.

Regards, Marcus.

Due to the large calibers I hunt moose with, I only fire my rifles at game.  My 450 marlin lever actioned carbine is only used inside 150 meters, so accuracy isn't critical anyways.  And my Ruger bolt fed 416 rigby has a 4x magnifying sight, and was bore sighted by a gunsmith.  I have shot 2 moose with 2 shots with my 416 bolt rifle.  Not bad!!

Ammunition here is hard to find.  I had to wait 25 weeks for my shipment of Hornady flat pointed bullets in 450 marlin, and Norma 416 rigby bullets are extremely expensive to buy.  And the recoil of these two big bores are incredible.  I still haven't fired a shot out of my marlin, although I dry-fire sometimes with it.

Practice is over-rated, especially for the unfortuanate hunters who are low on funds.

big bore -

have you ever considered casting your own bullets? i would imagine that they would work very well, not only for practice but also for hunting. if you want to know more regarding cast bullets, talk to some of the guys on the cast bullet board.

Thinkin' about it now it would actually be a pretty close call between my .270 and my .303. I bought my smelly for 175 bucks and it came fitted with a real nice sporting stock and it was drilled and tapped as well. It fits real good and I just love carrying it - oh, and it don't matter what you drop it in it will never refuse duty...

Aussies love their .303s (well I do anyway so there!)

Russ.
