Topic: Your Elk Gun Posted: 13 July 2003 at 11:48 |
Hey guys, i was just wondering what all you elk hunters use or will be using this year for elk. My setup will be a Ruger m77mk2 LR in .30-06 with a Simmons Prohunter 3-9x40 wide view on top. I still need to work up a load for it. I may go the saddlesore route and load up with 220 rn's. I also have my Thompson Center Scout that i need to work up a load for. I got Maxi hunters and Hornady Great Plains bullets. Got a pound of 777 so i will probably use that. I may do some hunting with my dad's Marlin 444S in .444 Marlin with a 22" barrel. I may try out another Ruger compact, but i doubt it. They are good when you are climbin up the two mountains in the area.

most likely i will be using 165-grain partitians, but who knows.......

TasunkaWitko. That's a real antique. Back in 65, I tried to order one in 300m ag.. then 7 mag. I don't think they ended up making any in those calibers. I ended up buying a post 64 Win in 7 mag. What a piece of junk. It took me 2 yrs to get it to shoot worth a darn. First elk I ever shot was with an 88 Win in .308 shooting Remington Bronze points.

NH;
Take a look at the partition type bullets or the Fail Safes in 180 also. A lot of the larger Western elk have been killed with them. You should be able to get a real world 2700 fps out of your 22" barrel without pushing the load. More than enough oomph for your typical short range shot.

Pointed bullets are bad!! LOL, just kidding. I guess i could do that, but it wouldnt be as much fun as a 220 grainer! If only Ruger made a lefty in .308 .

saddlesore. i don't think there were any mj9's offered with in mag chamberings - could be wrong, though.
this .308 shoots rather well!

Hopefully the 8mm will be reclaiming it's spot as my elk rifle. In factory form I used 220gr. Hornadys with decent success. It's anybodys quess as to what it'll like now, I'm hoping for 200gr. X-bullets. If not probably a .270 will get the call.

"just wondering what all you elk hunters use or will be using this year for elk"
Sako TRG-S 7.82 Warbird - Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20x
Later this summer, I'll get started on load development for the new 200 gr. Nosler AccuBond bullets. Will be shooting for 3300 fps.
Be aweful nice if the "limited elk permit" gods were to smile on me this year. I'd be one extatic little fello. >> klallen

Hey Klallen, how much does that thing weigh? Isnt the TRG-S a long range/ cheaper sniper option to the TRG-41(i think that is what it is called.)?

Morning >> The technical data on the TRG-S says the Warbird's 8 1/8 lbs (less scope). Seems to be Sako's version of a utility rifle. Not all that pretty but rugged. It certainly is accurate enough but isn't what I'd imagine trained, professional snipers would be using. I could be wrong on that. Don't have much experience with those fellas. >> klallen

I have a custom made .300 SuperMag. It's a Douglass barrel, Win Mod 70 action, Pacific Research composite stock, it's got a Leupold 3.5x10x50 scope. It's MagNaPorted and has a black teflon coating. It shoots Nosler 180 partitions at 3200+/- 15 fps.
I have a Sako Finbar in 30-06 Ackley too. My wife hunts with that when she goes. It's plenty good for elk. It likes the 200 Nosler Partition. They go slow but they kick butt when they connect.

I have several rifles that qualify as Elk rifles, but if I was forced to make a choice, I would probably opt for my 30-338 [M70 Action, Douglas Premium barrel, trued, bedded, etc.] With the 180 Partition at 3150 or the 200 partition at 3030 fps. Both stop Elk with authority. I have a 300 H&H that loves the 200 Partition, just about 100 fps slower than the 30-338, so It would be great as well. Regards, Eagleye.

This year I should be able to go on 2 Elk hunts, one on a reservation. If you put in for 10 different places you have a chance. I have used a 338 for the last few years, and it worked very well for me. But I have a new toy to play with. A super grade model 70 in 300 Remington ultra mag, box stock less the hot-melt glue. 4-16 Swarovski PH scope. If something goes south on me, it will be back to the Sako 338, that sucker always ready to go hunting.

They are legally mountains. Maybe not in your book, but in the Geographer's book they are The taller of the two is 2554 feet high. I live at roughly 800 feet above sea level. So it is almost a ton of feet between where i live and the top

BTW, if i dont have the ability to get around to getting my reloading stuff setup again and getting all the materials then this is what i will use....(dont laugh now)
Remington Express 180 PSP Core-Lokts. This is what i will first shoot the gun with. I may buy some Winnie Super-X with 180 fail safes, but that is only if the local gunshop has them.

I shoot a 180 partition usin' 58.5 gr of R19. Ain't found a more accurate hard shooter than thet in 25 years of tryin'. My .348 load is a 200 hornady backed by 65 gr of R19. Shoot 10 rounds of that off a bench an' yer babies will be born naked fer sure.

I have taken 3 Elk, with 2 different rifle's. The 1st was a 4x bull shot with a Rem 700, 30-06 ackly IMP. 180 grn corelokt, and IMR 4350 . The next was a 5x5 taken with my pre 64 mod 70 in 300 win mag,the 3rd was a 6x7 taken with the mod 70 as well. Used 180 gr Nosler's and IMR 4350 in it too. Going to carry a Whitworth 375 H&H this year. Just now working up the loads for it.
