Topic: Your absolute favorite rifle Posted: 18 August 2004 at 16:00 |
Let's get off the Savage debate for a moment and concentrate on what your all time favorite rifle is.
Is it a bolt action, such as a M70, M700, M77, or other?
Is it a semi-auto such as AR15, M1A, FN, Etc?
What action, what caliber, etc...

That's a tough one, as I have a lot of rifles that are my favorites when I am using them. I think myall time favorite though is my SAKO Finnbear Deluxe that I bought in a rod and gun club in Germany when I was in the Army. It's a .30-06. It put a lot of groceries on the table, won a couple of matches, and looks almost the same as it did the day I bought it. Sure it's kind of classy and dressed up and shiney, but, I never did hold that deer look for shiney rifles to keep away from. At least not the ones that I shot..........................Kingpin
For making a custom rifle, that is another matter. I like SAKO's. They can be bought just as actions, and though they are pricey, they make a beautiful rifle. Second for that purpose is a Rem 700. There are so many great aftermarket parts for them, it's hard for me not to like them.

No way, GUNRUNNER. Way, WAAAAAAAAY to hard a question. Just when I settle on what appears to be a correct answer to the question, a reason (or two) pops up why a different rifle should be the correct answer. I can't do it. >> klallen

I think my favorite would have to be my model 70 featherweight in .257 Roberts. I just love that rifle.

One I no longer have,Sako Finwolf in .308,more meat to it's name than I can remember. As for rifles I have now it would be a toss up I really like my Forester in .308 shoots great fits better than it should, but I don't want to take it in the woods and beat it up. So for that it would be my Ruger .270 or the wifes Tikka in 7mm-08.

It would depend on which day it was , and which rifle I decided to take.

Anschultz 22lr model 2013 benchrest.Unforntunately I can't afford the deposit on a new one but they are the best in the world.
For hunting I'll take a rem 700 for what they can do.Sendero or VLS.

My absolute favorite shooting rifle is a Sharpes 50/110.
The rifle I like to hunt with most is a model 70 Winchester featherweight in a pre-64 in the 25/06 caliber.

I have a Sako heavy barrel 243 that has been with me since 1961, must be my favorite, I shot it yesterday. My new favorite for a big game carry rifle is the 260 Kimber, beautiful and light. It will be my deer rifle for all my hunting this year. Did I say it was super light?

My favorite hunting rifle.... wow, that's a tough one.... I'll go with my Winchester Lightweight that was rebarreled to a 7-08.
My favorite gun that I own though is a Drilling made in Austria (in the 20's I think). It has 2 20ga shotgun barrels with a 30-30 running underneath. It is increadibly light. I have no idea what the value is. I never hunt with it, but I probably should sometime.

Moose,
You got to keep that senior citizen aired our. Drillings like to be shot.
Maybe at least a squirrel hunt with the 20 gauges?
If it needs a home, BEARcub loves 30-30s and 20 gauge .

No-can-do there BEAR. It was my grandfathers and he passed it on to me. My father killed his first deer with it and A LOT of black birds, crows, doves, and squirrels. I took it rabbit hunting a few years ago and it still shoots well.

my favorite action type is a bolt. i really get off on precision, and nothing like a bolt offers the strength and accuracy.
not sure about receiver type... there are pro's and cons to all of them. i guess the model 700 is my favorite overall... it is very easy to work with, and feels very solid. i like the concept of the model 70 classics, too... but, in practice they seem to be finicky feeders - and i absolutely abhor 3-position safeties, especially ruger's version.
cartridge... far and away my favorite cartridge is the 7 rem mag.
anyway, no single favorite rifle... i have strong dislikes, but the ones i like are kind of different shades of grey...

I love all my rifles but the most precious in my eyes is my old Winchester Model 70 XTR in 30-06.

i'm really likeing the old soviet-block mauser design in a commercial action. ZASTAVA, CZ, etc....i think the poles make one as well, but i am not sure what it is called.

I am with you, Tas! The CZ from the Czech Republic and the Zastava have a lot going for them.
My two favorite go-to rifles are a Springfield actioned custom with Douglas XX barrel in 6.5-06 made back in the mid-60's and my post '84 Winchester 70 carbine in .223. Both shoot less than an inch and have accounted for lots of whitetails, aoudads and varmints. That said there are a few in the works like my "Red-Dawg", a Rem 788, Canjar Single-set, Pac-Nor 25" #4 contour, McMillian Swirley Red,White & Black in 6.5-08 AI for LR varmints. One more and I will quit and thats a S&W Husqvarna 9000 barreled action in 30-06 that needs to be stocked. Oops! One more--a VZ24 with ER Shaw 26"SS chambered for the 338x57 MAI, a cartridge that I co-designed with my amigo Paul in Alaska. Thats enough....for new ideas keep rising to the surface at least once weekly.

Moose, Can you post a picture of that Drilling? It sounds very interesting.
And even though I started this thread I didn't say which rifle is my favorite. It is a tough question, as I like all my rifles or I wouldn't have them. But I guess the one I would never sell would be my 10/22. During the 21 years I've had it we've been through a lot together, so the sentimental value is a lot higher than any of my other rifles. So yeah, I'll say my 10/22 is my favorite rifle.

Well let's see... Today I shot the .223 a great rifle for practice
etc. Nice light recoil. Day before 7mm-08 fun, great range. So
with that I say love the .223(SAVAGE) and love the 7mm-08(rem
VLS) and the .243 is fun too...Oh yeah the Grand...
I think we all know the problem. In short the rilfle I am
shooting at the moment is my favorite(never argue with a
loaded gun or a loaded woman)
