Evening KINGPIN  >>  Since I've been tinkering around with this Ruger #1 in .416 RemMag, I've kinda been developing the desire to have a little series of #1's in big bore cartridges.  If I do persue this, the factory offered .458 Lott will probably be next purchase.

Was looking to round things out with the .470 Capstick.  Couple questions.  I've got a .470 NE cartridge, and along side my .416 RemMag case, it's considerably larger.  However, I see that the Capstick is driven to almost 300 fps faster velocities with similar weight bullets.  Is this a byproduct of the firearms they're used in (double's as opposed to the strength of bolts or single shots)?  I'm assuming so bit didn't know if it would be more a byproduct of the NE case not handling the pressures?  What performance are you getting with your NE?  What weight bullet you prefer, 500 or 600?  If this all were to come together, I'm thinking the 400's in the .416, 500's in the .458 and 600's in the .470.

This is all still a long ways out.  I'm only in the fact finding mode of this little brain-storm, but as ya don't run into many folks with .470's of any flavor, thought I'd pick your brain if ya had a moment or two.  Thanks.  >>  klallen

klallen, I have heard of the Capstick varient, but I don't have any experience with it. Is it rimmed (or as the English say, "flanged"). I had heard that it was a little hotter though. If you want, I'll drag out my "cartridges of the world" and check it out, it's around here somewhere. My .470 ammo cost me an arm and a leg for a box of 20, I am wondering what the Capstick cost's or do you have to make it? Also, mine is a double rifle. It's regulated at 75 yds, and shoots good for a double (3" at point of convergence). The recoil is a lot sharper than I remember, but it's still really sweet to shoot..........Kingpin

The Capstick is one of the proprietary cartridges built on a straight walled H&H magnum case.  That's kind of what's drawing me to it and the .458 Lott.  I really like the idea of being able to by the basic H&H case in bulk and fireforming it into whichever of these three (.416 RemMag included) I'm working with at the time.  Seems like a real cost effective way of doing things, since I certainly can't afford the $$$ you have put into your double or the NE ammo to go with it.

I think I can get into the Lott for under $600 through a gunsmith buddy.  "Spose I'll worry about the big one sometime after that.  Chat later.  >>  klallen

Klallen, it's ok to wait for a while, but don't ever pass on a great deal in the meantime. I was 30 years getting my double, and when I did, I bought a cheap one, if you can call a Merkle cheap. It cost me just under $10,000. For an H&H offering of the same caliber, $50,000 is cheap, but I am very happy with the Merkle. Lots of guys asked me why I bought an Elephant gun like that. I counter, that since I bought one, elephants don't come into my yard anymore. Also, since I bought the ammo, the Buffs have been staying out of the begonias............Kingpin
