Topic: X frame S&Ws Posted: 07 February 2004 at 11:16 |
Fella's;
I stopped in Scheel's here in the Falls today ( 2/7/04 ) for another purpose, but I did see that they had not one, but TWO S&W stainless X frame revolvers in .500 S&W. Those things are huge! I'd need a block & tackle just to get it in & outta the holster.

CB,
The original Casulls were that way. The first time I saw one I thought awesome! Then realized that with my size hands they were worthless....too small a grip, too heavy a gun, and too long a cantilever.
I guess they must fit someone, and they are beautiful. But useless for most people. The 629 is usable with a 6 inch barrel but if you ever hold one with an 8 3/8 inch tube it is tipping over the barrel.
I like the 10 inch T/C frames for really heavy handgun loads.
I'm waiting for the 50 S&W to be chambered in a small Marlin lever, I'll need on then.

Bear- agreed...I just don't see the use of a revolver that massive for hunting......when I held one, it seemed more like a novelty to me than anything really useful.......and I would LOVE to see a Marlin SS Guide Gun in .50 S & W.....

"I just don't see the use of a revolver that massive for hunting"
Morning BIGPAPA >> You making this statement in the context of "deer" hunting only or are ya taking into consideration dangerous game hunting, as well? I'd imagine those who find their hunting thrill taking dangerous game with handguns would find several important uses for a .500 S&W Magnum. I agree it ain't a revolver cartridge for everyone, but neither is the .460 WbyMag a rifle cartridge for everyone. I kinda look at these cartridges in the same way and see a similar use. The top of the line in their firearm category designed for the more ... stubborn animals . Very, very few cartridges I could look at these days and say, "I just don't see the use". 'Cept the '06, of course (just fun'in all you '06 loyalists) .
By the way, got an FFL holder that claims he can get one of these .500's in for under $700 (when the supply finally meets up with the demand). Considering what they're going for on the local shelf, I've had my name in on his waiting list for some time. I WANT ONE BADLY !!! Later. >> klallen

klallen,
I agree with you when you say "very very few cartridges I could look at these days and say I just don't see the use" Same goes for this new 500 S&W.
Haven't heard much about them. They are big and the one single article that I've read about them say that they are punishing to the average handgun shooter.
Hmm, guess I'd qualify. I own 4 pistols. Two S&W's a 44 mag and a 357 mag as well as a Colt 22 and a Beretta 9mm. The 44 mag is a model 29 and has the 6 inch barrel. I've taken one deer with it but haven't used it much. Looking for a good sight to replace the ones on my 357 mag as the red portion is kinda banged up on the front site and I can't stand the sight picture.
Was thinking that the 500 would fit the bill as a good hunting handcanon but I'm not convinced it would suit me yet. As always, too many things to juggle right now.
CB, I can't agree with you more on the smoothness of the action of the old smiths. I don't know if its use, design, components or what but they are smooth as a glass doorknob. Fun to shoot too. I think that too many of today's handguns, especially the automatics, need about 1000 rounds run through them before the action starts working smooth.

Well, I suppose that if a fella just had to kill, say, an elephant, and he just had to do so with a handgun, then, under those circumstances, the X frame could perhaps have some utility.......but for us "regular" handgun hunters, the X frame is a novelty at best..........I've kilt' alot of critters with various handguns (up to and including the .454 Casull, with my favorite being the .41 Remington Magnum) but if I truly need rifle level horsepower from a weapon, I simply take a rifle.........I know some fellas need (want ) a handcannon, but it is not for me........produces way too much noise, flash and recoil to be any fun to shoot on a regular basis.........and if you don't shoot it regularly, you have no business hunting with it............I know 3 fellas that bought them 'Smith's when they first came out, seasoned handgunners all......none like it. All say it hurts with the heavy factory loads, and is way, way too loud.........being more hassle than it is worth, they are looking to dump them already and go back to the .454 Casull.........different strokes for different folks I guess...........now, if they put the .500 S & W cartridge in, say, a Marlin lever action rifle, that would be interesting........................

Yessir- the .41 mag is my alltime favorite handgun hunting cartridge by a wide margin. Accurate, powerful and flat shooting, she is the best round for my particular handgun hunting needs- I have 4 .41 mag handguns ( 3 'Smith's and a Ruger)......... the latest acquisition being a mint condition Model 58 ( 4", blue) that I picked up just this past weekend at the gun show...hell, I didn't "need" another .41 mag, especially one with a 4" tube, but it was NRA 99%+, I mean truly cherry, and I got it for $340, cash (no box).....I could NOT pass that deal up, as Blue Book on that gun exceeds $450, IF you can find one............I have used my .41 mag's on deer and black bear with terrific results...and the round is so mild to shoot! Even my handloads pushing a 250 gr hardcast pill at 1280fps don't hurt me at all....so I shoot ALOT of .41 mag, and I hit what I shoot at.....know what? the critters die just as quick and dead as if I used my .30-06....ah, the joys of good bullets, well placed...........I always get a kick out of folks that believe you need a 20mm belt fed weapon to hunt, I really do..........I was told by my nephew (19 years old) this past season that there was "no F'ing way" I could kill a decent sized deer with my Marlin .30-30.........boy, was he surprised as we dragged my 10 pointer out of the woods......bullet placement with an appropriately constructed bullet kills game, not marketing hype about 6 pound revolvers that must be carried with a sling..........

I only know two folks who have worked in depth with the .500 S&W Mag and both say that it is less punishing then their Ruger SRH Casulls. Of course, I've heard several say that the SRH is one of the most uncomfortable platforms for high entensity revolver cartridges that there is. I guess whether this be true or not depends on the shooter. Myself, these warnings are exactly why I went out and got my .454 in the SRH. I figure if I can learn to handle that thing accurately, other large stuff wouldn't be near the shock. Now, I gotta try one of these .500's. I gotta see if all the hype about noise, flash and recoil is just hype and talk or actually warranted. It's interesting how I heard the same stuff back before I got my Casull. To big. To noise. To much recoil. I've really enjoyed that one. I'm sure the same will hold true with the new S&W Mag, when the time comes. >> klallen

With that much wisdom two things:
1st you got to be over 60.
2nd you have to post more often.
I bought my son a 41 mag 657 6" smith for his 16th birthday. No accounting for taste, the kid liked Stainless. I had the custom shop put a set of special sights and rework the trigger. It is 11 years later and he is still satisfied with the 41 mag. He reloads full power and some target loads and it is his 'go to gun'. He lives a 10 hour drive away, but when he comes home we reload for hours to get him 10+ boxes. He likes to let some of the 'nay sayers' that think the 41 is a puppy, shoot some of those full house loads. this kid is definitely in the fast lane, 685 para-jumps out of airplanes, on his third motorcycle, and flies a plane in his spare time. BUT the 41 Magnum has kept up with his fast lane life-style. I thought he would have moved up to the casull or a 50 S&W. but the 41 is satisfying. He shot his first wild boar with a 41 Ruger Redhawk when he was 15 years old. One shot on a headshot heading straight at him...dead on arrival. that skull is mounted above my computer now as I type.
Once you find a good thing.......don't change. Works for wives too. Besides changing wives is toooo costly.

ahh, you guys and your 41's... i've been on the fence for 4 or 5 years now on whether or not to get one. just so happens that the gunshop i am getting my 480 thru has a ruger blackhawk (maybe it is a super, i don't know) sitting on the shelf. marked at $275. i am sure thr price is high, but since i don't know what they are worth, i have resisted making an offer on it.
as long as we are taking this thread way off topic: called the shop... my 480 is in. going to fill out paper work on it friday. i get put on delay every single time, so i don't expect to actually have it until monday, but i can hope... one of these times they might actually let me have a gun the same day that i pay for it.

klallen- personally, I find the noise and flash of the S & W 500 with 440 grain loads to be abusive......and I don't care much for the recoil, either, but I can deal with the recoil better than I can the noise......that is one loud SOB.......now that I am older, I am trying to save what little hearing I have left, and therefore I HATE ported guns, like the X frame......but hey, to each his own....please let us know what you think about the gun, and the round, once you have had a chance to wring one out...........
Bear- thanks, I appreciate the kind words....but I am "only" 57 years old, so don't push it ........ I never understood why the .41 mag isn't much more popular than it is......it kills critters just as dead as the big thumpers, produces much less recoil and noise, and uses alot less powder to do it...... BTW, you son is a lucky fella, he has a loving daddy........
Dakotasin and NH_Hunter- you fellas just have to get a .41 magnum....you will not regret it, I assure you..........

Hmmm a .41 mag and a .45 LC. That could become one interesting combo! They also both use H110, which i have. Does the .41 mag like Win 296?

just wanted to say that i finally handled a s&w 500.
i found the trigger to be decidedly 'un-smithlike', but i suppose no worse than anything by ruger, or whoever.
the grip was surprisingly comfortable. actually made the massive beast feel almost shootable.
the cylinder and barrel... massive and heavy. even in a very good shoulder holster, i think one would get tired of carrying it. don't know what the thing weighed, but i'll bet there are rifles out that are lighter. the sheer size of the gun made it balance a lot like a ruger blackhawk (which balances the way it does because the weird grips), even though it had a well-designed typical s&w grip.
unfortunately, the finish on the gun was substandard. i expected so much more out of a $1000 smith. due to the finish, and the decidedly unwieldy weight, i rate this gun a pass on the buy-pass scale. i was disappointed because i wanted to order one - until i handled one.
