Just back from WY.D.D.A.M.S. The Wyoming deer, prairie dog,
antelope, moonshine, and snoring, hunting trip. Wingmaster, The Dad,
and myself were the attendees. We had put in for antelope tags but
didn't get drawn. Mule deer tags were available so off we went. Ten
miles or so east of Wright, WY. About 5500' ASL in the Rochelle Hills
we made camp. Pretty rugged terrain for us flat landers. We ended
up seeing two nice bucks and eleven does. Tags were bucks only
and sadly the only blood drawn was from The Dad's multiple cactus
puncture wounds. That is until we got in to a small prairie dog town.
Bigger targets than the Montanna gopher though we were shooting at
them at 160-220 yards in a fairly stiff wind so still pretty challenging.
We decided to check zero's on our deer guns and initial shots from a
.300 Win Mag and a .270 proved that prairie dogs really can fly. The
rest of the shots were .17HMR and .223 they both worked well also.
In the evenings steaks, lies, and some fermented apple-cinnamon
concoction from mason jars were enjoyed by the campfire. Sporadic
wether reports of an impending snow storm lead us to break camp a
day early. Within hours of out departure 37" of snow had fallen.
Leaving late in the afternoon our goal was to drive out as far ahead of
the storm as possible to avoid the inevitable Interstate 90 road
closure. The Dad and I made it but Wingmaster wasn't so lucky.
Leaving a few hours behind us for the airport in Rapid City, SD, he
was stranded there for several days. I'm sure he'll have some details
to add about that.

A wonderful time was had by all.

A special thanks to our gracious guide and host Wingmaster.

You left Wing alone???

If he is stranded, there will be no one to canibalize and eat to stay alive!!!   Maybe you should have left thedad there as he was already bleeding and injured.

Sounds like a good trip.  What are a few little hills and some snow to hardy outdoorsmen!

Fella's;

Hmmm, this sounds sewer-spicious!  Driving through the Black Hills of western SoDakia to get to Rapid City to locate an airport!  What!!

Lessee here, major storm coming in, drive through mountains to get to a tiny commercial airport, that has second-rate at best navigational aids, short runway (but it sure is wide!), and a lousy bar.  Or, drive outta the Rochelle hills on mostly flat roads to Casper Wyoming which was probably closer, has an over 12,000 foot long runway, better electronics, and a lousy bar.

No wonder they call Gyro-lette the dizziest city in Wyoming!

Had a great time, thanks to our host Wingmaster and the well supplied Deaddog. The first evening at camp was reminiscence of the campfire seen in Blazing Saddles after the Dinty Moore stew chased down with copious amounts of Alcohol. I'm not a very good judge of distance and my poor choice of rangefinder lead to missing my chance at the only buck I saw!

Just like on the TV show Impossible Shots, I saw Wingmaster knock a
golf ball over the top of a mountain. The hunters camping on the
other side probably thought it was a hail stone?

I got the cheapo bushnell, Wingmaster let me us his Leupold and if I had that when I saw the deer I would have pulled the trigger! The shot would have been 325 yards. Deaddog took me out to sight in my rifle before the hunt and I known I could have made the shot. Optics Planet has the Leupold Range Finder RX-600i for 229.49 with free shipping. I have my eye on that. I've dealt with them before and have confidence in them.

Thedad;

One thing I found out with my (not so cheap at the time I bought it) Bushnell is that the stated yardage is for a highly reflective surface.  A hairy animal can only be ranged at about half the advertised yardage.  After living with that restriction with my 800 yard yardage Pro Bushie, I'm lookin' at thousand yard or better rangefinders myself.

Oh, check SWFA for prices too.  I've dealt with them several times & they're good in my book.

My side of the story.

One night about quittin' time these couple a guys show up at my work. A few minutes and a clothes change later we headed out for a hamburger, beer and to make a plan. Then after a glass or two of some amber colored liquid from a bottle with a Buffalo on the label we had a plan.

The next morning about 5:00 am we set out. About sun up, we headed up a drainage lined with cedar bushes. When we got to the base of a really steep hill, (almost a mountain) deaddog spotted a doe sitting about 2/3's of the way up on the hillside. Thinking she might not be alone he snuck up closer to get a better look.

He Jumped a pretty nice buck from its bed but, the crafty buck got over the hill before deaddog could get a shot. So, we found a place to set up camp.

Then we went back out that evening to a place that I thought for sure would hold a few bucks. We split up, and glassed until we had to walk out in the dark.

Back at camp, we built a campfire and stumbled across some unidentified liquid in a mason jar and used it to wash down a pretty good stew.

The next morning DD set out on a morning hunt and, the rest of the party joined him right at the crack of noon with swolen heads compliments of the before mentioned mason jar.

A little later we stumbled across a prairie dog town and decided to check zero's on the deer guns. deaddog is right that under the right conditions a prairie dog really can fly. I saw one at least 3 feet off the ground.

Hey, Is that the same Prairie dog? Oh well, The other ones were waaay out there.

Then off to an evening hunt. Tonight we spotted another doe and thedad stalked out to see who she might be hangign out with. Sure enough, another respectable buck.

Once again a shot didn't present itself and another one got away. A little later we went back to this area and once again walked out in the dark.

Back at camp, we found another mason jar with some unidentified amber colored liquid in it and thedad layed some steaks on the campfire and deaddog warmed up a pot of beans.

We passed the mason jar around the campfire a few rounds and ate. For the record, thedad is a pretty good steak cook and deaddog does a pretty good job of making something to go along with it.

Well, one more empty mason jar later, we retired to our respective cots.

The next morning once again at the crack of noon while deaddog is out beating the bushes thedad and myself, after looking at the forecast decided to break down camp.

We hunted a little while longer without seeing anything and got the heck out of there about the time it started raining.

Probably not too bad of a decision seeins to how we had the worst snow storm we have seen in several years.

I got home just in time to take my wife to the airport in Rapid City South Dakota. Only problem was she got there just in time for them to cancell her flight.

This was my veiw for the next three days and two nights from a motel room with no electricity.

I can't speak for the others, but I can say I had one hell of a good time. I really wish they could have got a shot at a big deer, but I guess if it was easy it wouldn't be fun and everybody would be doing it.

I did learn a few things. Tiger Woods ain't got nothin' on deaddog. Thedad can raise a prairie dog 3 or 4 feet in the air from a couple a hundred yards, and these guys are about as good of guys as a guy could ever call friends.

Thanks guys for a great time.

I hope to do it again.

Wing;

I hear ya on the goat tags!  And, to add insult to injury, Wyoming's got more antelope than any other state in the union.  Neither I nor my son drew in our home area even with landowner's preference, so the two of us got skunked out by the fame & gish, not hunter's luck.  The SIL drew in another area & I think it's a doe/fawn tag as well.  No antelope chili in the coming year, and more's the pity.

I may have to take up drinking beer!

900f,

Wyoming has more antelope than people. I don't remember the numbers, but it was something likr 3 to 1 antelope to people.

If it is not a family secret, would you mind posting your antelope chili recipe?

I heard 75,000 head of cattle died and at least 5000 horses. They are
finding more every day as the snow melts. What a mess.

WOW. I havn't heard about the cattle and horses.

On the Rapid City stay, Once my wife accepted the fact that she wouldn't be flying out of Rapid City, We settled in and enjoyed the quiet dark motel room.

Then I started going stir crazy and set out on a mile hike to the truck stop across the highway from where we were staying. I then decided the quiet dark motel room was a lot more fun.
