learn from the mistakes of others, you don't have time to make them all yourself!

avoid chinese-made scopes as if they carried the clap. no joke, they have
got to be the worst, no matter what the brand. this is from personal
experience with a chinese-made tasco silver antler scope that would
never hold zero on a .308. a japanese-made tassco pronghorn was just
fine, and has served my dad for over 2 decades. similarly, tasco replaced
my defective scope with a world-class plus scope, and it has performed
very well.

i believe that the brand isn't so important as where the scope was built.
this for quality contriol reasons, i would guess. in my experieince, the
korean or philipine scopes are good value. if you want top quality, try to
get american, german or japanese. the japanese would probabbly, but not
necessarily, be the best value.

with your limited budget, it's tough to get everything you want, but try to
get "fulle multi-coated" lenses. there are fully coated, and there are
multi-coated, but fully-multicoared are the ones to look for.

if memory serves, the sightron s2 is 199$. japanese made, very rugged.
that or a similar scope would, in my opinion, be a great value.

Crazy;

All-time worst has been a Burris 3-9 compact.  I literally gave it away.  I replaced it with a 4-12 A/O Simmons Whitetail & feel I got twice the scope at half the price.  Phillipino made Simmons.

As far as what's best at a moderate price, I think it's hard to beat the Weaver's.  That being said, I haven't bought one since Meade bought the company.

What do you consider a "high dollar" scope?  Over $800 or over $200 dollars?  I presume we're talking about conventional rifle scopes, not handgun or extended eye relief types.

I think you can find good & bad in alot of brands.  I've used Burris, Leupold and Redfield and find them to work fine.  Bushnell works fine but I've only gone up to a 3 - 9 with them.

I agree stay away from the Chinese brands.

Recently bought a Mueller for about $160.00.  Never heard of the brand, but put it on a Remington 721 in 300 H & H.  Works just fine.  Check out E A Brown website for more info on them.  Made in Japan & Germany.

I've had bad experiences with Tasco and Simmons.

The Tasco was a bottom of the barrel cheapo model.  Never worked good.

The Simmons was a 44Mag 3.5-10x44 that had the crosshair break.  Simmons fixed it.  Other than that the Simmons was ok, but not great.

I had two Redfields that would be my worst. One worked just fine but the cross hair broke. The second I wasn't happy with it from the get go.

"Moderately priced" can cover a wide range depending on a persons definition. When I'm in that market I look at the burris fullfields, easy to find them under $200 and IMO a good scope. The Simmons Whitetail Expedition (not just a whitetail) was a very good scope IMO but discontinued. You can find them on ebay on occasion. I do find them ugly though and would only consider one on a varmint type rifle. My next purchase will be a straight 6x Nikon Monarch. I was going to go Leupold as I like them too but they seem to think they're gold plated these days and tie the hands of their dealers on prices.

I also have a straight six power, made in Japan Tasco that came on a used rifle. I use it as a fill in on new and yet unscoped rifles. It's spent time on a .270 a 8rem mag and about 40 rounds on a 416 rigby. Still works like a charm.

Is there a pattern here? I see that Tascos are taking an ass pounding. I can't see why. I use Premier Reticle Leupolds and have NO complaints................................Kingpin

Thought of my two worse scope experiences with the scopes of other:

1)  brother bought a new crossbow and a 2x Tasco with circular crosshairs.  Mounted it all.  One shot and the internal lens were a rattling.

2) Years ago Redfield made a cheap CF rifle scope with an epoxy mount and 3/4 inch tube, think it was called a Frontier.  At a range sight-in day, some guy with a 30-30 came with one.  He said he wanted the front sight out of the dovetail as it "bothered" him.  I set the barrel against a sandbag and the butt stock against another, nothing touching the scope and slowly tapped it out with a brass punch.  The scope and mount fell apart, expoy let go.

So far... So good:  Barska Plinker 22 IR... 2000 rounds and still holding zero...

Good: Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 worked great on my old .280, and a Sportview 4x32 on my Marlin 336C (ugh.. divorces suck!!)

I had a Chinese red dot like a cheap Holo Sight/EOTEC thing that the window shattered on the first shot. It came on a used .22 rifle that I had bought and I guess it wasn't made for a .500 S&W but come on, One shot!

Schlep;

Where's that Barska made?  I'm curious because Dillon is now offering selected Barska products in the Blue Press.  They usually won't touch anything unless it has a very good reputation.

No Barska listed in the June Blue Press it's a POS in my opinion cheap junk just like a lot of the chinese crap optics.Bushnell Optics is making optics for Browning when I asked about Bausch & Lomb I was told they've always been made by Bushnell so they discontinued the line.I bought several discontinued Leupold Vari X ll or ll c's with the CPC reticles,my favorite, on ebay last year primarily because of the Leupold warantee but none of them needed service.  Russ Chastain Shooting & Hunting forum moderator bought an S1 3x9x40 Sightron Scope for a deer hunt in Georgia and was impressed with the quality so I bought one and he bought another from a sale at midwayusa.I checked with Midway techs before making the purchase.

well time since my last post on this has taught me that tascos aren't the scope of choice! the scope on my son's tasco has already gone tits up!! I think my just did also, won't kno until next range trip! replaced his tasco with a bushnell 6-24x mildot it's clearer and brighter than the tasco and the cost ain't that big a difference! my wife who doesn't shoot took out a coke can at 200yd using my boy's 204 with the bushnell mounted on it, me I was having trouble with rounds going high when they should have been just a tad low! same thing that happened with my boys tasco when it when bad! looks like another trip to the range is warranted!

Go on Ebay and bid on Leupolds saw some good scopes recently that went for $103, sometimes people will get carried away bidding items way too high.I got one I wanted with an intermediate eye relief that I paid a higher price than I planned but it was a discontinued new in the box scope from a Leupold dealer who sells on ebay.

Crazy2Medic......My advice is to stay clear of "Redfield" and their scope warranty program period. I once sent those people 2 rifle scopes that were aged but in good working order. Those scopes were the top of the ladder from when Redfield made top notch rifle scopes.

The vintage of those scopes was in the very early 1970's, one a 4 x 12 and the other scope was a 2 x 7 widefield with range finder. I was to pay a fee up front and send the scopes OK. I did so at the cost of under $60 dollars. I spoke to those people several times on the phone prior to them getting the scopes and after their arrival.

I was sent a letter asking me if I wanted to "upgrade" my rifle scopes! I told them NO, just put the new O-rings in them and nitrogen or whatever they used. The trade in offer to me was really nothing at all , as I could purchase those NEW scopes for less money, without making the trade or upgrade from Wall Mart or anyone else that handled Redfield scopes at the time. NO DEAL I STATED.

The next letter I got told me that they could NOT FIX MY SCOPES!  I phone them again and told them I don't want them fixed, just reconditioned with new O-RINGS ETC. ........I was then told that my scopes were damaged now and were no good. I told them, if that was so why did it take your people 2 months to tell me that in the first place?

I told them to send me back my rifle scopes and my money sent them for the so called "RECONDITIONING" process they promised me on the phone during the first phone call. It took several more phone calls and several more months before I got my rifle scopes back........In worse shape than I sent them. The glass on both scopes has a film on them and cross hairs are crooked on both rifle scopes. The newer Redfield rifle scopes are gunk in my humble opinion and their warranty department is dishonest in their practice.

My choice of rifle scopes today are Leupold, Zeiss, Nikon and Khales.

Also stay away from the Tasco, Simmons rifle scopes or any scope made in China.....look pretty but don't hold up, not even on a 22 mag rifle.

I don't know how true it is. but I have heard from a few sources that some of the Leupolds on Ebay are counterfiet (knockoffs). Knowing ebay, it wouldn't surprise me. YMMV
