As I've been sitting here waiting for the .358 STA reamer to deliver, I've been contemplating the bullets that I'd like to test once the rig is together.

The 225 gr. Ballistic Tips will get a complete work-up.  Seems like a common sense move if this is ever going to be used on deer.

At the heavy end of this caliber class, I've got a box of 280 gr. Swift A-Frames coming.  I've heard nothing but good about these rugged bullets, so I'm excited to give them a try.

Woodleigh is an unknown, to me.  They have themselves a 310 gr. soft nose in .358 that does interest me a great deal.  Does anyone have any personal experience on game with any of these bullet?  I certainly don't mind jumping into a test-run of a bullet blind, but with the quality group of friends we have here from down under, I was hoping they might have something to offer on the subject.

Any info. appreciated.  >>  klallen

Hi Korey,I don't have any expierence with the 310 in 358 but all the woodleighs I have used in other calibers were excellent bullets for deep penetration and weight retention.

www.woodleighbullets.com.au is their site.

I have used them on water buffalo and they do the job right and will crack shoulder bone on both sides of the animal.

I'd say give them a try for big game.Accuracy at longer then 400yards i can't vouch for.

Kory

i was at the sportsmans whse the other day and I looked at the 225 grain Balistic tip,You may recal we posted on this before. The Box definatly said Whelen and I am sure it was a balistic tip.  That does not mean it would not make a good bullet for your sta, but unless they make another one it migh tbe a little thin skined for that power house. By the way I saw my whelen the other day.   He has the barrel on but says it will be at least another week or two for I get to pick it up.  Thanks for the tip on the adams and bennet barrels I think it will be a real nice rifle, my sith says he has done dozens of them with no complaints yet.

He also says if I want to do the 25,06 improved I should use a push feed action or he won't do it. He says he has seen to many dangerous problems with either that cartridgeor the .257 weatherby on a mauser action he advises against it.  So mabye I'll be trading my Parker hale for a 700 BDL, or just trying it again as is.

Kallen,

I seem to remember that Woodleigh were made down under, small volume and quality.

I used some of their solids in a 416 Weatherby.  they shot well and seemed to perform good on big stuff.  I would think of them if I was going to extend the game size with the 358 STA, ie griz/brown bears, kudu/sable, buffalo (were legal)

Bear, I think Federal in the US load some woodleighs in some factory ammo.I know Korey doesn't touch factory but it might be a quick way to check it out.RWS and Norma also use woodleighs in factories. They do work well.

MACCA  >>  Thanks for the info.  I'm gonna see how these 280 gr. A-Frames do, accuracy wise, first.  If I'm happy, I'll stop there.  If not, the 310 gr. Woodleighs will be next.  That's gotta be one long .358 bullet.?.?.?.?

TJ  >>  I just picked up a box of the 225 gr. Ballistic Tips for the STA.  I have to test them out on deer.  I just gotta.  We'll make it a real controlled test for starters.  Heart / lung hits so that rib is all that's encountered on impact.  Ya never know if ya don't try things out, right?  I just can't see there being enough mass to even the largest of Mule Deer to keep that heavy a bullet from exiting, even if it does fold itself inside out.  But for caution sake, we'll test it out real easy to start with.  G-luck with the A&B barrel.  Report how ya like it.

BEAR  >>  My curiousity with Woodleigh bullets is primarily for an elk load.  Certainly wouldn't mind getting over to Africa and trying it out on those plains game you named.  We'll see.  All depends on how the A-Frames do.
