Interesting thing about ALL the wild hogs I've dressed out.  They all had slugs or parts of bullets in them.  One had about 10 bullets, frags.  Always told me just how tough those big boars are to kill.  I found a perfect mushroom 100 grain .243 slug in one.  That boar just caughts that slug like a catchers mitt.  All have been old wounds without any abcesses or even infections.  No loss of meat.  Tough old boys those hogs.

Rob1,

I know several locals born and bred in MT that reside in many parts of the state, that will not eat antelope. True, some of them do or did live in GF, but they still would treat antelope like I said, or just not eat it. My wife had a friend that moved to Butte that her and her husband used to make fun of me for going after antelope. They didn't know why I wanted to kill and eat such a nasty tasting animal. I've eaten some weird things in my life, and have even eaten giraffe once, which I found to be very delicious. I feel if some one wants to eat an antelope or any other game, take care of properly to ensure it's at it's best. Don't be lazy, and then complain about it being nasty.  I firmly beleive that the taste of an animal depends on where it lived and what it ate. The first deer I got in MT, was in the Highwood Mtns. that thing tasted like crap! I killed three more near that area, but in or around agri fields since, and they were all delicious!

Hudge, Butte is normally known as Butte, America.....Even they call it that. I like a good elk steak, but Beef can't be beat. Taste is a preference like anything else.  Antelope are one of the most foul smelling creatures we hunt. I think that has something to do with it. Regional preferences vary, I've known people who eat possum I've met people who think suckers are prime table fare, most in Mt. would disagree, probably never have tried it, same with carp. I eat what I shoot, I just find it neccessary to transform it into something edible (to me), things like suasage.

Bear, here in Kansas we have a problem with the same mentality. Nobody wants to shoot does or the smaller bucks, they could care less for herd management, as long as they get their antlers. I personally am a meat hunter, and prefer to remove the weaker animals where I get the chance. As to eating them, the only complaint I've gotten so far was " Dad, do we have to eat deer again?", from my 5 year old, and I process my own meat, from field to freezer.

Possums aren't bad eating. Roast 'em on a rack, because they are a bit greasy...

Good post BEAR

I've eaten about all the game animals you can eat east of the Mississippi with whitetails being the number one thing that we pack into our freezer.  I/we (my family & friends) do a lot of management hunting on our own property - cull hunts and shooting the big ones.  I too believe that proper care of the animal (quick skinning, cooling, cleaning, processing, etc.) is what makes good game meat.  Had it not been for venison, I'd probably have starved in college or worse become a dang vegan , (yeah right).  Anywhoo, I think what the crowd here has been saying is right on track with what I've heard and seen with my own experience.

As for western critters, I've eaten elk and antelope and bear and mule deer - all very good, killed by eastern hunters.  The antelope roast was good, prepared using various fruit juices and apples and other stuff that I can't remember.  The hunter providing it did say that the outfitter he was hunting with mentioned that he didn't care for antelope and would provide some "leftover" lope meat to him if he had the room to pack back east along with his own antelope.

Don't suppose that means a whole lot being an isolated case, guess it really boils down to what are the reasons these folks hunt?

I've lived in Wyoming most of my life. We debone the 'lope and then grind all the meat together. Next mix it half and half with Jimmy Dean HOT pork sausage. Freeze in 1lb packages. Makes a great breakfast sausage. Everyone likes it!

Mulies are better eatin' when the rut is not going full swing. A big herd buck can be a stinky rascal and will not seem like a great meat animal to most hunters.

I shoot as many does as legally permissable each year. There comes a point when big racks become a storage problem.

A cow elk is fairly easy to hunt and quite tasty indeed!

I guess I am lucky. My family eats and likes Elk, Antelope, and Deer. In that order. Nothing beats an elk steak. It was kinda funny back when my daughter was about 9 or 10 my parrents said they would take the kids out for a steak. My daughter said "why would we want to do that? my daddy makes the best steaks anywhere."  Kinda makes a daddy proud.

I grew up on a ranch between Garland and Powell. But now live about 25 miles outside of Sundance. Plenty of 'lopes and mulies SW of Colony. Area seems under-hunted to me.

Being raised with hunters and christians,,I was taught 2 things,,,to waste food when so many go hungry is a major sin and to kill something,,,with few exceptions,,,and not eat it is almost as big a sin,,,more than once,,,but not many times,,,i have had an old timer scowl at me so intensely that I woulda rather been horse whipped, for either shootin' somethin' I didn't eat or for wasteing something.Now-a-days,,when I encounter the same,I keep my mouth shut but let the person in question see my disgust and shake my head at them,,,maybe it will have the affect on them as it did on me
