Starting to think the best cartridge for a Walk Around Rifle might just be the 22 mag RF.
They seem to shoot accurate, and you have a chouce of 40 or 30 grain bullets. Coyote, crow, groundhog, rock chucks would all seem fine with this choice. and no reloading required! thoughts?

I think that is a good choice Bear, depending on where you live. I think I will stick to my .223 truck gun. just in case I need to reach out and touch something a little farther out.

I'ld go the .223 as well or a .204. Walking the fields it's easy enough to get a reach shot off at field grizz. Same with crow. Easy enough to find a light weight one that likes some kind of box ammo you won't have to load for....but save the brass and do it anyway!

Not a bad choice bear for walk around gun....the .22WMR....however, I don't happen to have a rifle so chambered. Hence, like Wingmaster I defer to my .223 Remmy in my case a Ruger American LH so chambered for that job. Lite and easy carry and accurate nuff for that kind of work.

Thinking maybe a super light weight 17. Wish I could find a 17 HM2 in a bolt gun.
17 hornet might be nice.

Would the 5.56mm bullet be a better choice? what could a 5.7 bullet do that a 5.56 couldn't do?

Best argument for the 5.56/.223R is overwhelming availability for both ammo and firearms as opposed to the 5.7x28 FN round IF that indeed was what jsg was referencing. |

Ruger picked it up and the cartridges are becoming more mainstream then before. For close-in work under 2oo yards, realistically your putting it up against 17 hornet, HMR and other struggling small carry around types...it becomes interesting. Set of necking dies for 9x18....interesting.
I'ld still lean towards the .223 myself but to have a double duty, same ammo, it's an option. |

If I needed a walk around gun it would be a brush gun like a very short 45/70 or just a plane 30/30.

I am thinking lightweight. After thinking about this again, I have a Remington Mountain rifle. Before I put a scope on it it weighed 6 pounds and 9 ounces. I'm not sure how much with the scope. It's crazy accurate for what it is. About 3/4 inch at 100 yards.
I have killed a lot of different stuff with this rifle. Everything from prairie dogs to elk. It's a .308 but around here you don't get a lot of close up shots. Wing master

Guess it depends on where I'm walking now that I think about it. D's right about the levers for in and around, but I also suppose if I was walking strippins, fields or powerlines, something with more legs would be in order. Also have to figure in time of year and just what you may the need to dispatch. T-rex in tight may require one of those Hubel jobbies whereas at a distance the old 50BMG with a blacktip AP incendiary round would do just fine. Same would go for chippies and piney's, pellet or 22 mag. Yotes, just about anything inside fitty but if you happen upon one whilst walking the pooch on a long powerline....4-500 is a fair amount of real estate...…. I think perhaps a shopping spree is in order to make sure you have all those bases covered and then just grab what you need when you need it.
Doesn't hurt to have duplicates either!
