Collection Profile is a program designed to provide in-depth information about a specific piece in the Museum’s permanent collection. Throughout the month, visitors may pick up a copy of the Collection Profile, which includes an interpretation of the artwork. Also provided are details about the artist’s background, techniques and methods, as well as a listing of resources for more information. Copies of past Collection Profiles are usually available; simply contact the front desk or the education department.

The May Collection Profile is Alfred Jacob Miller’s watercolor, Indian Hunting Buffalo. Miller, along with Karl Bodmer and George Catlin, provided some of the first views of the upper Missouri River to be seen by the rest of the world during the 1830s. These three separate expeditions, all undertaken within a few years of each other, allowed the artists to provide three unique, yet similar, perspectives on landscapes and cultures which were standing with one foot in the past and one in the future. Join us Wednesday, May 5 in the Traditions of the West Gallery at 12:15 p.m. for an informal discussion about the artist and artwork; free with regular museum admission.

The June Collection Profile is Gary Schildt’s Painting, Piercing in Fulfillment of Vows. This depiction of a scene during the Blackfeet Okan, or Sundance Ceremony, makes a powerful statement on Native American customs and culture. Traditionally performed around the summer solstice, the Sundance is a ritual observed by nearly all of the tribes of the Great Plains, both in historic times and in modern times. Join us Wednesday, June 2 in the Good Medicine Gallery at 12:15 p.m. for an informal discussion about the artist and artwork; free with regular museum admission.
