Good points Bear. 

I don't know if it was that way back then but , as you know, we are at least 10 maybe 15 years behind the rest of the country. If that was the case, The .270 was pretty well known by the time people around here heard about the 250-3000. 

Believe it or not, When I first got to hunt deer in the late 70's it wasn't unusual to see people around here carrying 30-30's out in the field. 

I agree that bigger is better but if I was lost somewhere on the great plains of Wyoming and had to survive the rest of my life I would be comfortable with anything from 25 caliber to .30.

Lots of hunter here in the east still think 30-30 is greatest deer rifle...and it might just be.
