I've just returned from another four days of gopher sniping in Alberta. It was incredible! There were eight of us shooting, and we figure conservatively we killed over two thousand, and didn't put a dent in the population. I fired over nine hundred rounds, and the others were close behind. Two hundred fifty were from my muzzleloader, and by the time I ran out of round balls, my cheek and shoulder were so sore, even the .22 rifles were painful to shoot!
We also shot with Sharps, lever action Marlins and Winchesters in .45-70, .22 hornets, .222's, and a few other more exotic chamberings I don't recall right off hand.
You could stand in one spot, and shoot pretty much as fast as you wanted, and never want for a target.
We did some plinking this afternoon with a pristine Trapdoor out at about three hundred yards with good effect. We didn't get to shoot the 4 bore elephant rifle, as the balls we had located weren't quite the right size.
I'll post some pictures of some absolutely gorgeous rifles after I get them ran through the photo program. There were a couple exhibition grade engraved lever actions that are out of this world! Some day, I must get to Calgary, and see his main collection!
There was another old friend I hadn't seen for years from Calgary who came down. He is a Colt collector, and brought along some very tasty single actions for us to try out.
We burned a lot of powder!
