![]() ![]() ![]() Minnesota is one of the few States that allows this dying sport. It is kind of like deer hunting so that's why I like it. I take a weeks vaca every year to do it and this year instead of shoving the block of ice inder the ice pack I decided to see if I could bring it up easier than I have in the past. I was successful and believe I have a technique. I suppose the block weighs around 350 pounds or so. I have used chainsaws, chisels with augers, etcetera but without a doubt the ice saw is best. I had to have this one custom made and I guess you can find them readily now on the market although none of the one's I have seen have the craftsmanship of the one I have. Anyway here's a series of pics showing cutting the ice block an bringing it out. I'm aways amazed when I roll the ice block in the hole just how big it is. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I saw nothing. I was experimenting this year going very shallow. It sounds weird but just bringing the ice block up was a great accomplishment and I felt like I had speared a big old "Northern Pike." If you notice the top 6 inches of ice that's white in the block it was caused from a heavy snow. The ice surface is semi flexible and will flex downward with a heavy snow load, crack, and flood most of the surface. That slush created from the water and snow mixing will eventually freeze again causing the effect. Some years when you pop a hole the water will gush out for a long time. If your in an ice house village and pop a hole on the main road in you will piss a bunch of guys off. It is a lot of work. The high temp the day I spent the most time dawn to dusk was only 9F. I use Coleman Black Cat catalytic propane heaters and they work very well, the hole never started to freeze over. Two days after the above pics a big freeze came in and I said "No thanks...I'm not that die hard."
This is what it was reading in the outhouse. You tend to download fast in those conditions Edited by wolfkill |
