I don't have an HMR but I have been beside someone shooting one and it seemed pretty loud. Like ear plugs loud.

I have a model 94 Winchester in 22 Magnum and I have shot it quite a bit without ear plugs. That might very well have contributed to me getting hearing aids at the age of 50 but it didn't seem all that loud.

I have shot hundreds maybe even thousands of .22LR with no hearing protection during the weekend of MYGAWDS. It didn't seem to bother me at all.

I'm thinking that for a slow walking through the woods gun a .22LR might be a good choice. Depending on what you might be shooting at.

SHHHHHHHH!!!! My wife still thinks it's because of all years of construction and steel work!

Could partly be selective, but lets not ponder. Protection is always a good idea...I have six kids, I figured it out!
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!
