I'd much rather deal in Texas. With a Texas CHL, there is no federal "instant check" check involved, simply fill out the 4473 (gone from one page front and back to 3 pages front and back!) , and walk out. Oh yeah, pay your money... What is up with the "state registrations" mentioned? |

TG, we have the instant background check. In order for me to transfer a firearm, I have a toll free number to the Va State Police who conduct the background check. They charge me $2.00 per phone call. Sometimes I can do three or four instant background checks on one phone call. I am required to keep the state form for 5 years and I also have to keep the 4473 for 20 years, the last time I checked. That being said, I am sure dealers inTexas have to keep the fed form that long too. Here, we used to have to get a purchase permit from the city to purchase a handgun. No more though as of 3 years ago. They are the regs I have to abide by. I am not sure how you guys do it but am very interested................Kingpin

Trying to cover alot of ground here. I did pick up the 40X today - the guys at River City in Sacramento threw in a dozen or so sight bases, different heights, some stackables so the Redfield Olympic is mounted & ready to go this weekend rain or shine. Re the transfer cost & such, some dealers are reasonable out here & some are not. It's like California real estate - your dollar just doesn't go as far. |

In Minnesota for handgun purchases you have to go to the sherriff's office and fill out a background check form. It takes about 3-7 days to get your purchase card. That is good for one year. If you transfer a handgun through me I need to see that card AND call in the instant check to the FBI. No waiting after that. I just raised my transfer fee for internet purchases to 20.00 no tax unless it was bought from a seller in Minnesota.

Deaddog: Is the purchase card good for one year and as many handgun purchases as you want or just one time within the year? In CA we have to do clearance everytime, wait 10 days regardless of handgun or rifle purchase. What I find foolish is that already having many guns I still have to do the 10 days. Were I going to do anything bad I'd already have the means. Makes me believe the 10 days is to dissuade people from buying and the cost for background just adds to state coffers. |

The MN handgun purchase permit allows you to purchase about as many as you want I'm not sure if thier is a limit. I have to do extra paperwork if you buy more than one a day and I try to talk people out of that. Their is no charge for the permit and no charge for the instant check that has to be done for each one either. Long guns only require an instant check and the 4473. You can be out the door in 15 minutes with one of those. DD |

As many handguns as you want, huh. In CA we're limited to 1 new handgun per month, although you can buy as many new/used rifles and/or as many used handguns as you want.

Man, reading these kinds of posts spin me out. Not in the bad way mind you it's just that our laws are so different to yours and it's interesting to read about what's happening on the other side of the world. Apart from police and armored guards I can't think of anyone who can carry a handgun down here. |

With a CCW my choice for carry is a SS 2" 5 shot 38 spec revolver or a 45acp semiauto depending where I'm going and how I'm dressed the 38 is easily concealable much more so than the 45acp. Edited by 24mod12 |

I think I will stay in Wyoming. Just the federal background chech on a rifle or handgun. Unless you have a conceiled carry permit then you just fill out the yellow sheet and are on your way. I dont think I would get by in Kalifornia. Wing master |

Rugers have a heavy trigger for my taste. Durable, but on the heavy side, and hard on the ol' fanger. My advice...get a 1911. You can shoot anything auto if you learn good on a 1911. I do like Redhawks, though. Ifn' I was to meet ol' ephraim up close an' personal, I'd want a Redhawk...second only to a 12 ga riot gun with 1.25 ounce slugs. Avoid those goofy, sissy ass Glocks at all costs. Like I said a hunnert time afor, plastic is fer wimmins panties. Got no place on a shootin' IRON!

NH; To give my opinion on an earlier question of yours; SP101 with hammer in .357. You might want to consider the 3" barrel as well as the 2 and a quarter. But then again, I don't know what your mom has either. 900F |

I think I have found my self defense gun that will work in the woods or in regular every day stuff. It is a Smith and Wesson stainless mountain gun that has had the action slicked up beautifully, and was snuck into ruger to get the target gray finish applied. It has a 5" heavy barrel, but comes with the regular light weight 4". It also comes with the original hogue monogrip and one of their fancy set of wood stocks. It is in the wonderful .45 Long Colt cartridge, which I have all of the reloading equipment for. Best part is it comes with all this, the original box, all the papers, for the grand total of 500 bucks. The action is the smoothest I have ever had the pleasure of working. The balance is absolutely wonderful. I compared it to a GP100 with a 4" barrel, and the balance was much better and the action was sooo much better.
Now some of you are probably questioning my reasoning picking a medium framed .45 Colt DA revolver for ccw. The reason is that the gun has multiple uses. Not only can the catridge put down an assailant with more authority than a .45 ACP, but it also with different loads handle animals with 4 legs. The .45 Colt can also be very easily loaded down for serious target practice. I have shot a hell of a lot more revolver rounds over the years than semi-autos, so I know that my starting capabilities with the gun are going to be higher than with a semi. Did I already say that I already have all of the reloading equipemnt necessary for the .45 Colt? Probably. Also, the gun is a one of a kind and has been tuned by an excellent pistol smith who is in town. I am still debating what to use for ammunition in the thing though. I did a little reading, and it seems the gun mags say to use JHPs exclusively. The only JHP's that are light enough for self defense use appears to be the 200 grain JHP in Corbon's .45 Colt +P load (1100 FPS). I could use ya'lls imput on this aspect of it. I imagine that a semi-wadcutter with a WW alloy or something like that at 1100 fps would put down someone fairly well too. I also found the first CCW holster I am going to get. It is made by Milt Sparks and it is an inside the waist band holster called the Versa Max 2, and according to all that I have read it is the IWB holster by which all others are judged. It is a 100 dollar holster, but is supposed to be really nice and comfortable. Each holster is custom made for the gun. Here is a picture of it courtesy of Milt Sparks Holsters Inc. ![]() So, what are ya'lls thoughts? |

Agreed, I'm in Idaho and the same thing. I have a CCW and just bought a Taurus 444MULTI TI 44Mag w/4" bbl. Walked in, filled out the form, they wrote down serial # and CCW # and I walked out with the pistol. Could do that all day long if I wanted and had the money. I think the only limit is like 3 lines on the form to fill in serial #, so you might have to fill out an extra form, but I'm not sure about that, the most I have ever purchased at once was 4-5 firearms, but there were some black powder in there (Auction). --Carl |

NH; Another Milt Sparks IWB holster you might wish to consider is the Exec's companion. I've been carrying my H&K USPc in one every day for about a decade. I will say though that the odds of a revolver being comfortable in IWB carry are pretty high against. I didn't like it when I was carrying my SP101, & that's a helluva lot smaller gun with a 5 shot cylinder. 900F |

Not to step on any toe's but a P89 is a very reliable gun that can be a good CCW with the right holster & a long shirt or jacket. Same thing go's for a 1911. When Kansas CC become's law Jan 1st 2007 I'll carry each of them. There are some very fine short 1911's on the market that will suit the bill without any hassle. The only wepon I can't carry without a heavy jacket or coat is my XD45 Tactical. It's a shame because that is my favorite all time hand gun!

I got my ccw permit in 1979. I caried a Charter Arms SS Undercover 38 in an ankle holster and a Iver Johnson TP-22 (PPK copy in 22) in a rear pocket billfold holster. I carried a S&W model 29 in cold weather (rare in Alabama) when I could. I also had a shoulder holster for the Charter 38. This was my daily carry for over 11 years. You tote it a lot farther than you use it unless you're a cop. I now carry and recommend either the Kel-Tec 32 or 3-AT (380). I have both, and carry one daily. I now wear light shorts and a tee shirt to work in. The Kel-Tec's drop into your pocket without showing, and I have a belt clip on both. My brother has sewn a cotton holster into his right pocket of all his shorts for his Kel-Tec 32. My son carries a 1911, Taurus PT-145 (45 acp) and or a Kel-Tec 3-AT. I carry a Kel-Tec and keep a Taurus Titanium 44 spl under the seat of my truck. RULE NUMBER ONE OF GUNFIGHTING: HAVE A GUN A Kel-Tec in hand beats a 1911 in the car. The light weight (under 7 oz unloaded) isn't even noticed. My son shoots steel plates with his 32 and 380 Kel-Tecs. He just has to hit the plate high and he does really well back to 20 yards. He can still hit with it, but lacks the momentum to drop the plate. WHEN YOU CARRY LIGHT, CARRY COLD! Shoot for the head. It is the ONLY guranteed one shot knock down fight ender. A 22LR between the eyes works EVERY time. Any hit to a determined attacker that does not hit and damage the brain, spine or major joint will not drop an attacker. Even a downed, wounded attacker can still fire at you. IF YOU WIN, YOU GET TO TESTIFY. If only two are present, be the one that gets to call the cops. Several years ago in the American Rifleman an article in the Armed Citizen section was a story about a man in Dothan, AL, leaving the Cellular One office during a workday afternoon. He was confronted by three men (one was armed with a pistol) attempting armed robbery. The victim rose from securing his little girl in her car seat and instead of handing his walet over, drew and fired a small 22 short single action mini revolver (one of those itty bitty 5 shot revolvers). The bad guy dropped on the spot with a 22 short between the eyes. End of armed robbery. I live in Dothan, and it sure made the news here. My brother actually knows the guy involved (the both serve a local VFD). NOTE ON VICTIM SELECTION: Do NOT choose an armed, ex-Navy Seal. Especially if his kids are there! He will NOT be impressed and will probably kill you, with or without his gun.

Well, my CCW permit has been handed in to the police chief! Should know within 2 weeks or so. Right now as far as a carry gun goes I am leaning towards a Kel Tec P3at or the new 9mm version of that gun. Very compact and very reliable. I am thinking of either going with either an IWB or a pocket carry. Will have to try both out and see.
Thanks for all the suggestions and advice guys! |
