First off;
My load is a published load I have been using for a LONG time. I just cant find my Rio pamphlet it came from. We do a lot of goose/duck hunting on the river after Big game and before it ALL freezes up. On out last outing you would think My boy and I where shooting blanks and the D-I-L had all the "loaded" ones. She flat out kicked our buts, that trip. My boy has a Winchester 1100 pump and mine is a rem 870 super express, D-I-L just got a Stoeger auto. We all run a .669 choke ( very tight) . I do the shot shell reloading the boy does the brass stuff. We have found that a Rio blue 3" hull ,Fiocchi 616 ( ? ) primer 35 gr steel powder , TPS wad and 71 #2 steel shot (240 gr) and 46 #B steel shot (260 gr) That is just under 1 1/4 oz. ,the smaller shot has to be on the bottom at 1500 fps is death ( normally ) on Canada geese and golden eye ducks. 50 and 60 yards work well, not so good on a gadwall that sometimes slips up on you under 30 yards and that really is not the right load but, dead is dead. I have checked the speed with our Magnetospeed in different temperatures and there very consistent. We have not put the new auto on paper yet but what we saw I would say it is putting the spread right on target. We have printed out shotguns and at 40 yards a 30" circle will get close to 90% of the shot , you can see the #2/ #B spread . Most the B are in 15/20 inch and the #2 will fill in the rest, few flyers of either. I weigh every powder load and that are exact, I use primer trays to actually count the pellets, never mix the two, the weight may very slightly but the count is exact. Anyway what do you goose slayers use ? ![]() |

Nice looking birds.
While I’ve loaded tens of thousands of lead trap and hunting loads I am still under 150 steel. I just couldn’t duplicate the factory stuff speed and pattern wise. Pattern testing is something I really do a lot of. I have rolls and rolls of Christmas wrapping paper with one inch squares printed on the back that have all my test data. Ammo type, shot size, speed, choke tube, etc. One thing I’ve noticed is that choke constriction can only get so tight with steel before the pattern comes apart. 675 is the tightest I can get to pattern with .695 being my favorite. Tighter kicks worse too. Instead of a duplex load I’ll have a #2 in the chamber and BB’s in the tube if I’m expecting ducks and geese. Just ducks. #3 or #2. Just geese BB. I’ve been on some crazy snow goose hunts. Extended mag tubes no limits. 5-6 boxes of shells a day for three days in a row. Those days that you think you are shooting blanks can happen but if your gear worked in the past I wouldn’t make any drastic changes. Edited by Go-ddaed - 30 November 2017 at 21:53 |

So the Lady showed you guys up!!!
I use to load all my shotshells for hunting and trap. for geese and ducks, I use to load a 1 1/2 oz lead #5 in a 2 3/4 case with SR 4756 powder. I had to hand stack to get them all in. This was with paper case and wads. They were devastating in my 870; but kicked like %$##. Worked good on crows also. Now days, I just buy shells. Gave my Dietmeyer 100 press to a young guy.

Lead! The good ole days. I only had a few years of being able to use it before the change to steel. So much better many less cripples. Hevi-Shot is even better but at $3/shot I just can’t do it.

In the lead days, I use to take 10 trap loads with#7.5 lead. Great for dispatching cripples on the water swimming toward cattails with broken wing. On the water dispatching can eat a lot of shells with no real effect.
