Guess what showed up today! Ordered it Saturday and here it is. Nothing fancy, oil stained walnut. I cleaned some of the edges up, but it dropped right in. Included the butt plate. I am pretty pleased with this, just shy of $200 (shipping, tax and all) for a new walnut Winchester 88 drop-in stock. Much slimmer and lighter than the Fajen that was on it. Now just need some sling studs, scope bases should be here this week.

I think it looks great. I don't know if it would be worth it to you but I'd be thinking about getting it checkered. That could really make it look nice.

I think a nice cut checkering pattern would be neat too. At what cost tho???
The Winny basket weave on the 88 & 100 was impressed vs cut I believe.

Anything I have seen from them at the shows is not. I don't need to spend thousands on getting this checkered.

No, they are pricey. Absolutely great work, but you will pay for it. They do period restorations on rare rifles as well as custom mods for new lever guns. But lets face it, if you are willing to pop a couple K on a new 86 but you want it in one of the older rarer chamberings not offered, they are just about the only reputable folks out there doing the work. Whats the extra k or 2.

A not-so-quick google search,(I digress into a different zone), shows many fine smitties doing the checkering. None are what I would call reasonable. Your going to pay for what you get and then either pay again for the refinish or a DIY once completed. If you are in no rush and you have younger eyes and nerves. A DIY checkering job for those with said skills and a decent amount of patience can be both rewarding and beautiful.

Checkering is certainly an art I think. Years ago I used to order "stuff" from Flaigs & one of the "stuff" were trigger shoes for various guns both long & short guns. .....even have one on an 870 Rem.

Yea, I live close to Flaig's "up on the hill".

Those trigger shoe were not made by Flaig's but designed and sold by them.  Actually a small machine shop in Monroeville PA made them.  That shop was a client of mine and I got to see them make them (automated screw machine).  they were greaat shoes, and that shop tried to sell them after Flaig's went out of business (owner died).

Got a bunch of those shoes on my guns, never had one move, those two allen screws wworked.

The shoes were great for the rifles of that era, as all had really slim triggers; mausers, springfields, 70s, Salo, etc  that was because they made the slot in the trigger guard small, to keep strength.  Rem 700 and others lead the way in the late 60 to making wide triggers.  so much of the need for the shoes declined.

Few shooters 2 inch today remember those 'Rifleman' ads  Just olde farts like you IBD and me.
