In 1964 the Rat-L-Trap lure was introduced. A noise lure with shot inside. I never thought much on these lures, with a little funny dorsal fin. Never bought into that noise thing.
Last year I was fishing in Ontario. not much hitting. Lodge owner was pumping his sales for Rat-L-Trap, thought I'd get some secret spots if I bought one. no secret spots. next day was fishing off boulders, bingo fish on ever cast, bass, walleye, pike. finally lost that one lure, tried other lures few hits. next day with 6 Rat-L-Traps in pocket, hit the same ledge, bingo again. now I don't fish without them. My parents lease a camp on the St Lawrence River, border of NY and Ontario. My brothers and I would spend HOURS casting for Northern Pike, our #1 lure...Ratln-Rap...the chartreuse one that resembled a perch. I had one that was tore up from pike teeth. We tried alot of different plugs, but the ones that worked best were the ones that rattled.

From what I understand, it's the vibration not necessarily the sound. It is supposed to imitate a wounded bait fish with erratic movement/vibrations.

I make those same noises swimming in the ocean. It attracts jellyfish really well!
It's just my bones and joints rattling, no gimmicks!
