Took the Llama 357 and my wife to the range today. She hasn't fired a hundred rounds in her life. I loaded some 138 grain cast SWC .38 Specials over 2.5, 3, and 3.5 grains of Clays. Also some light Unique loads. I fired one shot to check function and turned her loose while I watched over her shoulder, posted targets etc. My first problem appears to be that the .357 dies dont crimp the .38 Specials enough. Although they went in the cylinder they were definitely tight at the mouth. The 2.5s were a little weak but let her get the feel of things. She really liked the 3.0 Clays load and put 3 of 6 in a 2" targdot at 20 yds. Two more were within 3" and the 6th was a flyer. This was on the third cylinder full from a novice shooter. She was shooting single action. The next cylinder full was at a pop can sitting at the edge of the berm under the back stop. She only hit it once but I sure wouldn't want her shooting at my shirt pocket as all six would have been minute of torso. THe 3.5s were a little stiff for her liking but she had no trouble handling them. Over time I'll turn up the steam a little at a time. After she burned through 36 rounds I tried it out with a cylinder of 357s. Recoil seemed fine. I didn't shoot as tight of groups as she did, which I'll never hear the end of, but I had a problem with extraction. I opened the cylinder and was able to push the ejector rod out a bout 1/4" and then it hung up. By using my finger nail I was able to extract one of the six but still couldn't get the rod to push nor get the others to pull individually. I ended up tapping it out with a screw driver handle. Once it got past a certain point they all dropped right out. I'm wondering if I had a ring of fouling from the .38s that wouldn't let the .357 case mouths past? Any ideas on the .38 crimp? Am I likely correct on the extraction or might there be something else going on? Over all the jury is still out on this but it looks like it might achieve one goal. My wife had fun, wanys to go again, and an hour later I heard her invite one of her friends to go with us next time. I may have created a monster! RD

If you think the gun was expensive, wait till you got to pay for the accessories to go with it. You know, the shoes, purse, hat, gloves, etc., etc.. Rockie's gonna be poor! Rockie's gonna be poor! F00 |
