This past weekend I got to go pheasant hunting in Carthage, SD. Oh my! I wasn't prepared for the volume of birds. I was part of a group of 17 hunters. We shot over 100 birds in two days. The season starts at noon and we were done cleaning and bagging by 4:00 each day. I went out at home on the opener and got a rooster and saw three hens after four hours of walking with the dogs compared to the many many hundreds I saw in SD. I'm wrecked forever now, pheasant hunting will never be the same for me.

I took my little Bobwhite side-by-side 28ga. It worked well except that it doesn't have auto ejectors and I couldn't keep up when the shooting got fast and furious. Next year I'm taking the Red label 28.

One of the guys in the group took some nice ones. I post them when I get them.  They are impressive.

I heard stories of people trying to catch falling pheasants and breaking an arm or wrist. I had some land about 10'-15' away and you could feel the thump of them hitting the ground.

Each Feb. I go on a 20 man 300 bird pheasant shoot.  Birds fall for about 3 hours straight.  Yes they make on h#$% of a thump.  Usually have to duck to miss getting hit, as the birds are all coming toward you.  They are tower shot, so the 28 ga would be challenged!

Interesting how getting 30-40 shots at a birds in a few hours of shooting improves your game bird shooting.

Notice how those field birds take off right when you are changing your footing.Wink

Awesome deaddog.  I sure miss those SD ditch-parrots.

When I move to MT back in '98 some of my co-workers, knowing I lived for hunting, told me how good the pheasant hunting was around here.  Since being here, I have only shot a handful.  They just don't understand how many pheasants there are in SD.

I would also like to see some pics of your hunt.  Wild birds?

I believe it is a mixture of hatched and wild but nothing like tame ones on a canned game farm. The clubs up there do more with the habitat. They plant a special grass that has seeds and cover to help them survive the winter.
