I've stitched a few hides, and I can attest that even the "little" .223 can cause some big holes. I've also heard of the old timers using stuff as big as .270 and .30/06 on coyotes regularly. I realize that there isn't a bullet made for the bigger bores that could possibly be expected to frag and not exit or or frag and not leave an even bigger hole on the way out, so what can you expect in the way of exit hole size with "normal" deer bullets in these bigger guns?AW

Unless Solids or very heavily constructed bullets are used, Damage to Fur will be unacceptable in my view, especially if bone or shoulder is impacted, Usually solids will Arrow em, If you are planning on putting up Fur Commercially, you will definitely move away from heavier thinskinned projectiles. The heaviest cal i use is a 6x284, using 68gr Bergers , i limit its use to about 350 and beyond, but i do not favor this cal for commercial fur hunting and use it on special application.

I personally see the .25/06 as being on the heavy end of practical as a western coyote rifle of choice. I even read a very good article on it some years ago in the "Trapper". If circustances dictate a heavier than optimum "fur rifle" I guess that either FMJ or real tough big game bullets that fail to expand on 40 lb coyotes might be a second best option.AW
