| There's a good chance that a 35 Whelen boltgun is going to follow me home this week. The one thing about it is the length of the barrel. Right now it's 26" long. For anyone with experience, what would I lose besides a bit of velocity it I were to take and have it shortened to 20" or 22"? Besides being a classic cartridge (one of my failings which accounts for the 45-70 Gov't, 45 ACP and 45 LC in my safe) it fits well and has the horsepower that I'd like to have for longer shots. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, 788 |

The 35 is a great cartridge. Other than some velocity loss, the longer heavier gun will tend to shoot better for many folks (not all). The balance will shift back if you cut the barrel and many people think that makes the muzzle tougher to control. this is only a personal thing, and might not make any difference to you. Muzzle rise (depending on the stock fit) might increase, as will recoil with the lighter overall weight. Personally I bought a 338 over the 35 one day in the gun shop as the 35 had a 22 inch barrel and the 338 had a 24! Different strokes for different folks. Many people that are not use to bigger guns might think the muzzle blast from a 20 inch 35 Whelen gun was undesirable. Just some thughts, it really depends upon YOU. Get what YOU want, and be happy. That is why we buy more guns than we every need. But let us know what you desire, and post a pic so we can all drool. BEAR |

One thing that BEAR didn’t include is the muzzle blast in going to increase, SUBSTANTIALLY. My own .35 Whelen wears a 25" barrel and is a sweet shooter. Wouldn’t cut a fraction off it. Lawdog

My .35 Whelen is a H&R ultra, 26" barrel, but the breakopen is at least 4" shorter than a bolt, auto or pump.
I really like it as I shoot mostly cast bullets and the .35 Whelen, as the .45-70,seems to love cast. I get 2600fps with a 158gr gc swc with 36gr 4227. 200gr Rem. CLPSP, 58gr BLC-2 , 2450 fps and a 214gr rn gc , 40gr 4198 or 45gr Rel 7 for 2400fps. The accuracy with all is 3/4" or less at 50 yds, this would be fine up to 200yds for most anything. Recoil is not a problem with any of these loads.  ------------- Don |

I gotta be an odd ball here ! i would probly hack a couple inches off her. I doubt you would loose much, I shoot a prety fast powder in my 35 Whellen and I get very good velocity from my 24 inch barrel If I ever have another built it will have a 22 or 24 inch tube. what kind of action is this one built on ? Its a real good cartridge I took mine and my .338 win mag elk hunting and when i was ,nt carying my 45/70, the whelen was on my shoulder...tj3006

tj, it's built on a savage action, not one a barrel nut one though, McGowen barrel in a Bell & Carlson stock with a Timney trigger. I'm still debating whether it's the way to go or to just spend a lot more time at longer ranges to master the 45-70. 788 |

I bet its a good shooter, I don't know how much you would have to spend on the custom savage , but you could get a remington CDL for a little under 600 in the whelen. The custom savage would probably be a good rifle though...tj3006 ------------- Freedom 1st tj3006 |
