the non-resident invasion has begun... starting to see lots and lots of out of state license plates, again. i figured the price of gas would keep more at home, but it looks not to be...

non-resident numbers will begin to swell, and peak sometime around the 20th, and start to recede again. best time to chase pheasants is early november, so i don't know why so many people come here for the opener, but, whatever turns 'em on i guess.

surely some of you are headed out here - maybe already here?

if in mitchell area, stop in at the brig or steaks n' more for decent table fare.

m&h gas station has about the best non-restauraunt coffee.

freedom has the best gas prices.

leader has your best buy on shells.

cabela's has the best deal on pigeons.

jackpot is the best bar - by far.

wal-mart is the best place to dump non-hunters off... right across from a strip-mall and next to a tractor supply. hours of time killing available.

kelley inn is the best hotel, followed by hampton inn. holiday inn is good for a respectable price, and not to be beat if in sioux falls area.

1 week and counting to pheasant opener... good luck hunters!

Can't see driving that far for birds.  What is the limit per day?  ND was 4 birds.....I can get hat much shooting local in PA.

Might sound stupid but I'd drive to SD for PDs and I do.

yeah, bear, i agree w/ ya. i understand why folks in say, minnesota come over for pheasants, but during pheasant season i'll typically see plates from all 50 states. number one plate in years past has been tennessee, but so far this year, number one is washington. in either case, that is a haul!

funny... if i was in pa, i would drive here for a prairie dog shoot, though i wouldn't do it for pheasants. i find that funny because: you can't eat a prairie dog, but pheasant is fine eating. you will get sunburned on a dog shoot, not for pheasant hunting. you have a fairly high probability of getting something nasty from a dog town - if nothing else, chiggers... again, not on a pheasant hunt. you will sweat yourself off 20 pounds on a dog shoot, just sitting there baking in the sun... pheasant season usually sees highs in the 40's - 50's. ironic, anyway, that you and i would travel thousands of miles for prairie dogs, but put minimal effort into pheasants. lol!

if/when you make it this for a dog shoot, let me know. doubt i'll be free in may because i'll be graduating and hopefully getting ready to find a job/go to work, but i could certainly find time for a cup of coffee and a few lies somewhere on 90...

I guess one travels if you can't do it locally.  I've got more turkey than you can shake a stick at, we're only allowed one a season.  so my brothers and I are hunting them with archery gear to make it last.  No Prairie dogs in Pennsylvania or New York (my hunting and fishing home grounds) so I'll go 1800 miles to were I can shoot at them all day.  But three pheasants a day doesn't excite me.

Figure those good-ole-boys fromTenn  drive all that way so they can think of themselves as Nascar drivers.  (moose, Tika, TTU, little bear, et al)

Sorry dakotasin, always have to be checking up on your stats (actually, I just wanted to see if it had changed since I live there).

The posession limit is 15, instead of 10.

ahh, well... don't pay that much attention to it since i don't get real excited about pheasants. i guess that would be an important piece of info for a non-resident who was willing to pay too much for a license, and spend a ton on gas etc, though...

still... at 2-3 pounds/bird...
