Sounds delicious.  thanks

But I think I'll substitute leeks for the onion.

Burp.

Loose the canned chicken soup, add a bit more milk and a bunch of canned clams and it looks like it will make a great clam chowder.

Sounds good about what I do with Halibut or Clams added for cold day lunch--chowder.

Hey Tas, thanks for the bacon-potato chowder recipe. The wife made it for supper lastnight and it was outta sight. She had to use cream of celery soup in place of chicken, 'all she had', but it will remain on our 'special recipe'' list to enjoy throughout the winter. Thanks bud.

yep, guys - this is a great one. i think it will always be right up there near the top in our house as well.

substitutions here and there are always a good idea, not only to conform to individual tastes, but also to try something a little different. it's pretty amazing though, that the base recipe is so versatile!

My wife wants to know if you add any liquid to the bacon, potatoes and onions (cause potatoes usually need water or something...)?

edit - We did it without adding any liquid - only the bacon grease.

The wife and I use a 5oz. can of evaporated milk in ours. Seems to make it creamier and not so thick. When reheating any leftovers I add about 1/2 cup of water.

sorry for the lame reply, tony, my keyboard was FUBAR and i was reduced to doing what i could do with a mouse!

when we make ours, we use the bacon grease and add no water, but i would think that hunter-fisher's evaporated milk would do the trick as well.\

let us know how you like it!

It was great Ron. We were surrounded by ice, sleet and snow warnings, but did not actually get much. Temps were well below freezing and your recipe sounded good to warm the soul. We enjoyed it exactly as printed above and I look forward to warming some up for lunch today. Thanks!

glad you enjoyed it!

beware! sometimes this recipe also serves as an aphrodesiac....whether it is the soup itself or the gray winter days that it is perfect for, i am not sure!

That is some darn good soup! Too bad Mrs Rivet doesn't like cream soups with taters in them  But for me, this one's a winner!

let me know how it goes ~ i'ts a family favorite here, and easy. it also lends itself very well to improvisation, so the green chiles should go very well!

This is a family fav now...man was it good. I did tweak it as a man can't follow directions..lol...what i did different was I fried and blacken the corn and green chiles before putting into the chowder. I also through in a can of condense mil and a dried and ground serrano for a kick with a pinch of cummin. I love this stuff. I really think frying the corn was part of making this over the top. next time i will also fry the potatoes almost like a crispy hash brown chunk. with that crusty outside. I think it would work well. either way this recipe is great and you can add or do it the original way and i'm sure it would come out great. thanks taz

Man o man....frying the corn sounds like a winner to me, thanks for sharing that idea~ I am imagining those golden browned kernels in the soup adding that tastiness. I have got to make this even if it for myself and work-lunches!

So I was looking through this cookbook I bought in about 1990.  I have hardly used it, not even once a year!  And then, I found this bacon-potato chowder recipe.  I read it through, and I thought that looks good!  Then I thought, it looks familiar.  Then I thought I would check out Tas' bacon-potato chowder, and the picture looked familiar....

All these years I had that wonderful, delicious recipe and I NEVER tried it!!!  What a crime!
