My dad let me go hunting with him this morning to his favorite spot.I took my 243 with me.It was very cold today and a heavy frost was on the ground.I was getting cold as we waited on daylight to come.About thirty minutes after daylight five does started feeding out of the woodline in front of us.Dad said something is up with the does. They were acting kind of strange.Dad said, get ready boy you are going to see a buck in a minute or two.Like he said a 6 point came out of the woods and I wanted to shoot it but he said ,no its a little buck ,just wait. Then we saw what the does had been nervous about. An 8 point walked out and dad said,he is a shooter.I thought he was going to shoot it,but he said get ready and take a good rest.I asked him if he was going to shoot it and he said this is a good buck, calm down and take a breath, when he turns broadside put your hairs right behind his shoulder and bust him.I was still pretty nervous and he said , he is 150 yards out put the hairs where I said. The buck turned and he whispered now.The 243 went off and I saw him run for the woods.I said did I hit him cause I thought I missed.Dad said no,that was a good shot you popped him square through both lungs. We walked to where I shot him and there was blood everywhere. He run away for about 50 yards and was dead when we got to him.Dad says he wouldve been a 9 point but he broke off one tine probably fighting. Here is my buck.

Hey 6MM, WAY TO GO!!! That's a real nice looking buck. Sounds like you're becoming a sharpshooter with that 243. Did you do any of the gutting or skinning to it? Keep up the good work.
Now go practice your band homework.

Hi evrybody.Thank you all for the replies about my deer.We are going to make a skull mount with him.Dad is going to put it on a mesquite board for me.I have learned a lot reading posts here.I killed a spike buck and a doe early in deer season but this is my first big buck deer. Thanks to my dad for taking me and letting me shoot him.He teachs me a lot about hunting to.I do not like gutting the deer.It is nasty and they stink when you cut them open.I like hunting and I hope next year to get another big deer with dad.We took dads jeep to where we hunt and parked it a long ways from the stand. When I shot him we had to go back to the house and get his truck about 2 miles. He drove all the way to the deer so we did not have to drag him.He was very heavy to lift on the truck. He says befor to long we will go up where a lot of you guys are to hunt an elk.I cant wait to do that.

Young Man, I know how proud your dad must be. You have done well!! I
remember well when my young ones took their first game and it is
something that I will treasure forever.
Do you reload or do you use bought ammunition? What are your preferences?

6mm - Well noboday can kill um any deader than that. Nice shooting!
You are a lucky young man to be able to learn to hunt from your dad. I had a great dad but he was not a hunter so I am still teaching myself. Just like you I am also learning a ton from the folks here at the BaitShop.
Looking forward to seeing alot more of your pictures and reading your stories.

Hi evrybody.Gerard I use store bought bullets.Dad bought me the stuff to reload for my 243.He has been busy making bullets for 2 of his guns so he said I can use the winchester bullets for now.I like to watch him do reloading and he has been showing me all the steps to do.He is making up some bullets for me to shoot coyotes with.He said they are lighter than the bullets I used on my deer.thanks evrybody

6MM,
Good job!!! I sure do miss that Texas hunting. You and your Dad make quite a pair out there in the woods. Y'all have the deer worried for sure. Not many hunting days left out in TX... you better go get one more.
Congratulations again!!!

6mm Ghozt & Dad
6mmGhozt - Congratulations! That's awesome. My first buck was an 8 pointer too but not quite that big. That's a nice buck. Just don't get spoiled like I did, I didn't kill another 8 pointer for a few years! I'm sure that you'll get many more deer though and any deer harvested cleanly is something to be very proud of! Now, remember once the shot is fired and the deer is down, the work begins - you've got to field dress them and drag them out. That's part of being a hunter too! Give your Dad a big thanks for doing the hard and gross stuff the first time! Next time, I expect you'll be fully prepared to do it yourself with Dad helping a bit too!
TimberGhozt - Can't tell you how excited I am for both of you. You both have done very well this year! There's plenty of folks I know who didn't fare 1/3 as well as either one of you did this year! Congratulations! Guess 6mmGhozt and I will be learning something new together - coyote hunting! Guess I'd better get the Rem. 700 VLS 22-250 up and running, sounds like he's got quite a head start on me already! Probably not as many up in my neck of the woods as yours but enough to make it worth the effort. Thanks again for the yote machine! Can't wait to see the boy's first! Heck, if it will help I'll send down a set of field dressing gloves so he doesn't get too bloody but then again, what fun would that be?
Good job both of ya!
Brad

Hey Moose..Yup it is about over.A few more weeks and its back to calling yotes and hunting feral hogs.I still have not seen that big 10 point I missed early in the season.I suppose thats alright..We`ve got a freezer full of meat ...but that big ole boy was in the 150 B&C class.. He sure would have looked nice on the wall of my loading room.
Brad, thanks bud.We have had a really good year.It has been a learning experience for me as well.Trying to teach a young person the ways I was taught is a very difficult thing but very rewarding as well.He is learning well and picks up on things I do and things he sees in the woods. He asked me how I knew we were going to see a buck.He doesn`t quite understand when I tell him that animals talk if you know how to read their body language.I am sure he will pick up all the things he needs to know in time. You are right, the next one he downs I am letting him do most of the work as I supervise.Coyote hunting ..he has a long way to go but I am working on it with him.Good luck with that electric call Brad..I hope you kill a bunch of em.Hell,I never used it..I prefer a mouth call,so I am glad somebody will be able to get it out in the woods and have a blast with it.
