Just to show how much of a green horn I am about this archery stuff, the string that I thought had snapped was really the cable. I also lost the little plastic fulcrum thing that the limbs bend around. I caught a bunch of flak for buying the thing off the internet from the guys at the archery shop but oh well. My face is pretty much healed anyway. The thing that bothers me the most is that I'm unable to hunt for another couple of weeks waiting for that plastic piece to be special ordered.

It happens to all archers early in their careers deaddog.  Slapped wrists, loose pins, string caught up in clothes, yep been there for all of them.  Bowhunting is a journey so don't feel bad about the bumps along the way.  We've all been there!

CB: Such as? I have some in-laws that empty the shot out of .410 shells and stuff aluminum arrows down the barrel without any fletching. Don't have to worry about broken strings or cables.

Deaddog,

Sorry to hear that your bow wacked you.  Those cables and strings require some complex tuning at first.  And some annual checks.  Lots of energy stored in the limbs, so you don't want to let any twist get in there.

There are some good books on "bow tuning" explaining the "valley" etc.  But it is always best to let the pro at the archery shop do it if YOU ARE NOT 100% sure.

Glad to hear the damage to you is minimal.  You can always replace a bow or a part of it..........fingers and eyes don't usually grow back.

Sounds like you are getting back on the horse.

I was in Wyoming archery hunting when you first posted this...so I missed it.

Do you have the bow fixed now??

I'm fixed and back in the saddle again. I have to admit that I haven't shot it as much as before the incident.  I took most of Nov. off and should get in alot more time hunting with it. I'll let you know how it turns out.

How long does a recurve have to be to get 300 fps out of it? Mine is turned down to 235 fps but my neighbor with the dreaded Mathews Switchback says he uses the same pin out to 30 yds. I say for $800 it better field dress and haul the deer back to the truck too. Back to recurves. They just aren't as handy in the tree stand. I bought a new target the other day and have been preparing tree stands already. A co-worker invited me out to Grand Junction, CO for some elk bowhunting but I'm not confident I could get that close to one and it's 1100 miles away from me. I will admit that if that bow flies apart on me again I'll be looking for a new one but I doubt it will be a recurve or a Mathews.

Recurves dont have to be long to get arrow speed. Its all it the limb design. Longbows need to be longer to get arrows speed. Thats why mideval archers could shoot 500+ yards. Their bows where 7-8 feet long and had a better power stroke. My recurve is only 62" and with its pat limb design it could easly do 300fps If I didnt shoot telephone polls out of it.
