Any one out there hunts Boomer's(sage grouse). In all the other western states there by permit or protected all together.Replies:

D4570; Yeah, I've hunted sage grouse in Wyoming when I lived there. Haven't hunted them in Montana. I do actively hunt the blues & all other upland bird available here. I won't be going on the 1st though. It's that 'work' thing. The thing about S-G is that you don't want to shoot the big slow ones. If you look closely after skinning, you'll find the imprint "Vulcanized by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co." somewhere on the meat. I don't know how they do it, but I do know it's gotta be there somewhere. i went along with my dad several times hunting pheasants and huns, but have never shot any myself. can never get the hang of popping them with a shotgun! hopefully this time next year, i'll have a shotgun and some practice, and will be out getting some huns, cause they sure do taste great! ------------- TasunkaWitko - Chinook, Montana  Helfen, Wehren, Heilen Die Wahrheit wird euch frei machen |

| I'll post a few pics tommorrow if I get a chance - Taking my son and one of my students out after school today to kill a few sharptail and huns. I've had the dogs out several times in the last couple of weeks to get them back in shape and found that the populations of both bird species look to be in great shape. |

I've hunted a lot of ruff grouse in New York and Pennsylvania. Great sport hunting, and they are delicious. The Grouse I see in the west seem like they are from a different planet. they sit on the low limbs of fur trees and stare at you. A 22 pistol or a good sling shot would get one of these dumb bunnies. I'll be in Wy in two weeks. If they are in, I might take a trip thru the Big Horn NF and try with an arrow. Maybe I should take a 410? BEAR

 We call them fool hens(Franklin's grouse)Our blue grouse and sharp tail grouse aren't quite that supped. The sage hen is a plains bird and would rather walk them fly, so they don't do it to well, they fly at around 15mph, they are the biggest of the grouse too. It's really easy to over shoot them(miss out in front of them). Ranger1; Generally, where are you seeing the good bird populations? As in what state, or area of the state? Wouldn't want you to think I'd try to move in on an exact area, but birding has been fairly poor here in central Montana the last several seasons due to drought. | In the NE corner of MT bird populations, although lower than last year, are not bad. Last year was a banner year for all upland birds in this area. I was out last night with 2 others and we had our limits of sharptail and 2 huns in 2 hours. Sorry no pics - Forgot to grab the digital camera from work!!! |

Well, we only have ruffed grouse and pheasant here in NH. The pheasants have to be bought and placed in specific fields, because they cant stand our winter. Next year, if i do have a bird dog, i am going to raise some hell with the bird population  ------------- Leverguns make me smile Proud Left Handed Shooter |
