Why is it we don't spend more bucks on 22 rifles.  Seems like 99 percent of 22 rilfes are low cost Marlin, Savage, Mossberg.  if a guy doesn't reload, he probably spends more shots from his 22 than his '06.

True the hunter spends lots of bucks on his HP rifle becasue he was confidence.  But if you asked someone to spend $500 on a 22 the average guy would slowly move away from you, like you had a tinfoil hat on.

Tika,

I'm in there too.  I've got two Marlin bolts, and one single shot Remington bolt I bought new for $35 in 1960.  Whatever the thinking  (or non-thinking) I also suffer from it.  i jsut wanted to know why?   And should I buy a new 40x?

Bear;

I cover the spectrum I guess.  I've got the inexpensive Savage MKII LHB on the low end, under $150.00.  Then is the Ruger stainless 77/22, which is the middle ground, but purchased in the late 80's.  Seem's to me I paid less than $300.00 for it.  On the top end is the Volquartsen.  This was done at the shop in Carroll Iowa, not my own drop-in parts conversion as so many do now.  Scope & all, I must have around $800.00 in it.

i don't spend much on 22's because i just don't like them. i have 2 (i think...maybe more, not sure <-- goes to show how much attention i give them). 22's just bore me to tears.

that's funny. and true too... maybe some day i'll break down and buy that new remington bolt... then maybe i'd appreciate 22's a little more. but for the forseeable future, i have little use and no interest in 22's.

You think they give you the look over .22s, try showing them a $400 Beeman or RWS air rifle!

TG,

Shit who would spend that much money on a BB gun?????Big smile

the foil looks good on you.Wink

BEAR

Actually if you are a hunter a good air rifle is a great investment as you can shoot in your home or backyard all year round.  and keep the squirrels away from the feeders.

I guess I fit in the class that does spend that kind of money on .22's and adult air rifles(they are NOT BB guns). All 4 of out 10/22’s and both of my 77/22’s(one is a .22 WMR) wear Green Mountain barrels. The 10/22’s have Volquartsen 10/22 HP Action Kits(triggers) in them while the 77/22’s have Timney 7722 sear & spring kits in them. All have after market stocks on them as the standard Ruger stocks were made for midgets. I have also paid over $800.00 for a Rapid 12/250 and a Beeman air rifle. But seeing that I spent as much on the wife’s rifles/air rifles she has no complaints. Side benefits of having a wife that is as big a hunter/shooter as I am. Lawdog

Always been a Marlin man. Back in the late 70's I damn near bought a Ruger bolt action. Was the prettiest rifle I'd seen in a .22, the price scared me off. Wish I'd a bought it now. These days I shoot a Marlin model 60 with a 3x9 Simmons on it. Also have a Stevens "Little Scout", July 2-1907 was the patent date. It' a single shot rolling block. Was my grandpa's rifle, he passed away in 1975. It's been in the family a day or two! Shoots as good today as when it did when I was a young lad. As these pellet guns these days, they've come a ways since my ole pump-up Benjamin days.

Bear, good subject here.My 22lr is a ss 10/22.I think I paid like $220 for it 3 years ago.Of all my guns it gets the most workout. It is just plain fun to shoot.Whether it is shooting cans, paper, pond wrecking turtles or rabbits in the garden, it stays busy.I have a few different 22`s including a Henry I got for Christmas last year but all  fail in comparison to the 10/22.I dont get to shoot it much anymore in the burn a brick of ammo fest`s.My boy is old enough to shoot and  more often than not his mdoel 60 Glenfield is layed aside while he terrorizes targets with  the 10/22..lol ...Gene

Gene,

Unfortunately, I live in a state where semi-autos ie autoloading rifles arre illegal to hunt with.  So I'll probably never own one.  Looks to me like Ruger really lucked into a big volume seller with the 10/22.  I've shot some at the range and they are nice guns, and have a better feel than the Marlin 90 (?) semiauto.

I started the thread, because I'm thinking of a 40x or a Kimber.  Something with nice wood and a tack driver.  A single shot or a 4 shot clip bolt.  If Ruger made the No.1 in a rimfire, I'd have one.  super in a 22mrf.

The cheap Malin and Savage RF shoot ok for hunting and plinking.  But if you shoot a target model from a prone postion with a sling, they are amazing.  i'd like that accuracy, with some class.  I once shot a pre ww-2 Mauser 22 SS bolt rifle.  WOW.  That was a rifle.

Bear;

If it were me, I'd go with the Kimber over the 40X I think.  Probably because I shot the 40X so much, there's no lure of 'new gun' there for me.

Great topic... Every serious rifle shooter should have at least one good quality .22 rifle in the battery...

Right now, for me, I have a pair of Ruger 10/22's set up in Butler Creek synthetic stocks... seem to cover the niche right now for when my son & I want to do some .22 rifle plinking...

A few years back I had a real nice Brno [CZ] Model 5 bolt rifle. Man are the CZ's tack drivers! The older CZ's have evolved into the 452 series. Still great .22 rifles...

Lately, I've been thinking about getting back into a good bolt .22 rifle. I think a Ruger 77/22 would fit the bill nicely. But then again those CZ 452's also call out...

Anschutz makes great rifles.  A friend was an importer in the 1960-70s.  I shot a lot of them...stupid me never bought a lot of them.  They had a model 54 i think that was in 22, 22 Hornet and maybe 22rf mag.  The one I used had a Schnubel foeend and double set triggers.  I like the nostalgia of the double set, but Anshutz makes a perfect single trigger that is adjustable.  And Anshutz still make wood stocks, I think.  Yea, yea i know plastic stocks are better....but the beauty is in the wood.

The Anschutz actions for 22 rf are scaled to be 22s.  I hate the current thinking of making a longer action for a 22rf cartridge.  look at the length of the Ruger 22 bolt guns....long.

It's not the guns that I mind spending the money on it's the ammo. Run .89 cent ammo through a $900 gun and it shoots like a $200 gun. I always have trouble forking out $6 for 50 .22 Ely's but that's what it takes to get it to shoot up to it's potential. I can load about 40 .233's for the same price. Bang for the buck just rattles in the back of my mind. This new .17 Mach2 will be the same. Sell them for $1.99 a box and maybe I'll bite.

Deaddog,

I was surprised how cheap Gander Mountain was selling the 17 Hornady RF.  I don't own one, figuring it will be loke the 5mm Remington rf.  But the ammo was reasonable.

Bear: I was talking about the .17 Mach2 not the .17 HRM. The Mach2 is based on the LR not the WRM. I don't think it will be available until Sept.  What are you calling cheap? My distributor price is $6.89 for Hornady .17 HMR's but that's still too much for me.

Bear,

Once a man spends over $1000 for a good .22 he wonders what took him so long! Look at it this way: An entry level Sporting Clays o/u today is probably over $1400. The newer Beretta auto is over a grand. Lots of folks who will never be serious about shooting registered targets will go that route. El Cheapo 12 ga stuff is about $3.50 per box, or 7 bucks for 50. Even reloads will cost over $5.oo per 50 given today's shot prices. So picking up an Anschutz with a Model 64 action in one of several cnfigurations for  the same money and springing for good ammo at about the same as cheap shotgun shells makes a lot of practical sense. Tricked out 10/22s are very nice. A slick Anschutz or Walther target rifle is unbelieveable. To get wrapped up in a good sling and to know without any question that every shot broke with the peeps centered will be in the ten ring is pretty special. Hang a big scope on one and expect to shoot at bullet holes at 50 yards and hit them.

They are worth every penny. I'll beta 64 Anschutz bouht in 1967 will bring a higher multiplier of the original cost than a 10/22......

Ditto what Earl said.My Anshultz cost me $3200 Oz and is one of the most magnificent pieces of manufacturing I have ever been associated with.It shoots groups that just make you smile.Kept me very competitive in small bore disciplines for a long time. The confidence instilled by them is incredible.I still think it was great value for money considering the satisfaction it gives me.

Bear, Sometimes these cheap .22s aren't replaced because they just plain shoot! My Mossberg 146B with iron sights will shoot far better than I can hold it as will my Savage NRA 19. The key here may just be the ammo. When people get serious about, and can afford, a high class gun they also tend to get serious about, and can afford premium ammo. I'm no expert by far but my Savage will turn in 243 out of 250 in BR .22 with Remington/Eley or PMC target. I suspect that this is the best I can do, not that the gun isn't capable of a higher score. It will drop off by 10 points or more with 89 cent ammo. If the money is spent on the ammo, a little trigger polishing, and a paralax free scope some of these old guns will shoot right along with the high dollar guns. In the face of that arguement I'd love an Anshuetz or an old BSA Martini, gun nut (excuse me, firearms enthusiast) that I am. RD

I have 4 Remington .22 rifles. 3 of them are 40-X's and one is a 541 S model. I also have a Finnfire sporter, 4 Anschutz 54's, 2 Winchester 52 E models, some high standars auto pistols, and more. These are just the ones that I can think of, off the top. All of my .22's are the high quality variety. My air rifle is a Fienwerkbau 300 S. It cost me plenty. I bought it used from a guy who inherited it for a little over $1000 and some gun work. I shoot nothing but Eley 10X ammo, it's the most consistant ammo that I have found that works well in what I shoot, so when I buy ammo, I buy it by the case. I have long felt that the .22 is about the most underrated rifle of all. All .22's, and I DO mean ALL, are capable of much greater accuracy than the majority give them credit for. The difference in costs of .22's is immediately apparent price wise. The quality ones all have great triggers, which is very important. The lower priced ones have triggers made of sheet metal, while very acceptable accuracy can be had from them, it just takes a little while to adjust to the trigger. Yes, no one will ever get an arguement from me when he wants to buy a .22. They are accurate, and one hell of a lot of fun for an afternoon of relatively low cost shooting. The new rimfires are fine, but, I got stung with a 5MM Rem once and am very leary of any of the new fad rimfires. That being said, break out the .22's and have fun..........Kingpin

Kp,

You hit it right.  I just got my Marlin 22 RFM back from the local 'smith.  the trigger was sh*t and i looked at it close (3 piece stanpings).  I'm not that good witha hone to off it went to the smith, and he did a nice job for $30 and one week.

I need a 40x or an old 52!
