I know a few (very few) guy's archery hunt for elk. A few questions here, it seems you'd have to have some stock with you to get it out fast due to it being warmer, OR you'd have to hunt within a mile or so of the road. Also seems like you'd have to hunt with a partner and cow call behind the guy with a pointy stick about 50 yards cause from what I'm readin' / see'n they tend to hang up where they would normally be able to see the cow. i.e. about 70 yards. Does anyone use scents? or other interesting methods. It seems like this would be harder with the bow, but fun as all get go. See'n that your screw'n with the mind of a critter hell bent on hump'n something, and ain't think'n 'bout much more. Spot

Having stock or a stout partner is a good thing. Team calling is the most deadly but you can get them in solo too. I don't use scents but I've tried decoys and they have promise. I haven't killed anything over one yet but I've had some good reactions so far. |

Spot one thing not to do that I did,shoot heavyer overall weight on your shafts and broadheads frist time I went thinking like a blacktail deer hunter,light and fast,2nd go around, I went with a stiffer shaft and moved up from my 90gr wasp's (shutter) to a good heavy Rocky. Tried going double did better on my own,get your calling down frist drive everybody nuts practicing,good camo (Predator is my favorite),I like scents according to the season. I like an aggressive calling technique. A rutting bull is pretty dumb, if you keep the wind in your favor, and use cover. i will call, and then move towards the bull as a rule, then cow call. i believe it makes them think they are moving in on the side of a herd, while the bull is on the other side. ------------- Shooters Cast Bullet Alumnus http://www.castboolits.gunloads.com/index.php? |

Always move toward them, even 10 or 20 yards, after you call. Most of the reason they hang up is because they know exactly where that last sound came from and they'll look there first for the "elk" that made it. If you move toward them (and into the wind) you'll force them to look for you and you're more likely to get a shot. Never make a move on a bull if the wind isn't in your face. Move across the wind a bit as soon as you know where he is in relationship to you. Only accept a quartering wind if there is NO available cover to use to get it in your face. If he can't see you he'll start hooking around downwind to scent you. It's a chess game and the wind is a big factor. If you learn to play the wind game you'll beat him. |
