Klallen, right smack dab in the middle of Texas.We are overrun with yotes.It has gotten so bad I`ve read articles in the Austin American Statesman about yotes in the city stealing house cats and lap dogs out of peoples yard.I will try to blow up the better pics for ya,lol.

Macca, I shoot Hornady 40 gr V max moly coated in my .223.This is factory ammo as I do not load for .223 Rem.Hornady sells it under the name of Varmint EXP and claims a muzzle velocity of 3800fps.It is rather expensive at my price of $19.00 a box of 25 cartridges.

I plan on letting my boy use my 7x57 this year to deer hunt with me.He`s a pretty decent shot with his Glenfield 22lr.I think we`ve got a future yote popper in the making,lol.Tikka,maybe so on the poop.Little booger sure did wreak....Gene

  Back when I was living in Red Oak, Ft. Worth put out a bounty on coyotes. Too many were getting into folks yards in the 'burbs and have a great snack on their pets. At the time, the state hunters were overloaded with requests to thin them out from many, many parts of the state.

  Ft. Worth received permission to hire folks, not too many, and let them hunt in the outer areas in the infiltration routes. In the housing areas themselves, we used bows and stands. Very unusual feeling to be in a tower blind and watch a little boy riding down the street on his bike.

Fellas , I drilled me another one last night with my 223 Rem.I couldnt get on the site last night to post pics but figure I will today.

This yote made me work for it.The wind kept shifting on me and I moved three times to get a better spot to work because of the wind.On my third spot I called twice and he come out of nowhere on my right side.He was looking at me and my hide when I put a 40 gr VMAX straight through his neck into his spine.He folded up hard.I am derned sure impressed with Hornady`s little 40 grain bullet.I wish I wouldv`e had this one on tape.At 65 yards it was a devastating hit.Heres a pic of a good male yote courtesy of my Weatherby VanGuard 223 Rem.

I see your still using the 40 gr. V-Max in your .223?  My Savage .223 has a 1:9 twist so I've been tinkering with the 75 gr. A-Max.  Great results, accuracy wise at 100 yds.  Got my loads ready to back up to 300 and then see what they can do way out past that.  This A-Max has kinda changed my thinking on reasonable ranges for the .223.  If you're rifles got the right twist, it might be something to look into, if you're looking to extend ranges.  Not sure what ranges your hunting requires.  If you're happy, disregard the last paragraph as babble from a goon in MT    .  Later.  >>  klallen 

If your twist is 1:14, the 75's would be out.  When I bought my bullets, I got some 50 gr. V-Max's as kind of a middle-of-the-road back up bullet, just in case the 75's didn't pan out.  Somewhere close to that 50 gr. bullet weight would probably be the upper end of stabalization in that twist.  I don't know though.  Lately, we've seen some rather suprising things in certain cartridges being tested with bullets stabalizing in twists that they should not.?.?.?.?  I see the 50 V-Max has a BC of .242, 52 A-Max a bit better at .247 as opposed to .200 for the 40 gr. V-Max, but not sure if there would be a noticeable difference with the velocity loss you'd experience.  Be one of those things you'd have to tinker with, I suppose.  I do know at close range, some of the lighter bullets going Mach5 give some real dramatic kills on varmint.  Specially if ya like the red-mist effect.  Maybe with a 1:14 twist, that's the intended purpose WBY had in mind with the Vanguard     ...     light bullets going fast    .  Either way, it sure sounds like it's getting the job done for ya    .  Later.  >>  klallen

Klallen,Timber,re the stabilising in the 1:9.I get superb groups with mine from 50 to 75 grains.I can't get over how well the 52 grain matches shoot out of it.

Them's nice yotes.  Love to go chasing them but they're tough to see with any regularity in my parts.  Though you can rest assured they're out there.  Great service you're providing them farmers and a blast to boot I'm sure.

I've been hankering over a 223 for some time for a walking varmint rifle.  Even considered ridding myself of my 700 VLS in 22-250 for one but I don't think I'll go that far just yet .

As for the Hornady's you're using, I've only started loading some of Hornady's stuff here in the past few years and thus far have been impressed with accuracy and performance.  In fact there's probably more Hornady boxes in my bullet cabinet than anything right now!

Thanks on the yote Macca .I really am a fan of the more hyper .224`s such as the legendary Swift and the 22-250.Like Klallen says, the fast little .224 bullets wreak havoc on small critters.I know I take a cut on velocity versus some of the cartridges with more case capacity, but derned if a 223 Rem isn`t fun to shoot.

Hey Brad, thanks.I wouldn`t swap a 22-250 for a 223 Rem.I like the veloxity of the 22-250.I almost bought one the day I purchased this Weatherby.They had a bigger price tag on the Ruger M77 22-250 than I had  cash in my wallet for.Initially I was turned off by the black synthetic stock  but I figure it is a hunting rifle anyways.Its only purpose is to hunt with so a pretty wood stock to scratch up is no matter anyways.I do like Hornady bullets.I`ll admit I have more boxes of Sierra bullets on my loading bench than Hornady,Nosler and Speer.The 165 grain .30 Hornady SST`s in particular.I load them for my 300 Win mag and I`m gonna start loading them for 308 Win too.You are right , it is a blast to do.If you ever make it out this way let me know.We`ll hookup and see if we cant give your 22-250 a workout on a yote..

Coyotes here are very abundant.I dont complain though.Between coyotes and feral hogs they keep my hunting skills tweaked during the off season times.Plus they are just fun to hunt.Let me know what comes of your VMax load development,Sierra too.I am gonna buy me some dies from Midway for mine pretty soon and tinker with loading the VMax to start with.I might dabble with the 52 gr AMax too and see what happens.I am going tonight to a place that has yielded me a few yotes in the past.I havent hunted it in a while and figure it might produce a dog..We`ll see what happens.Talk at ya later..

No luck tonight.Very little wind and it was in my favor, good hide overlooking thick growth  with a draw in the middle.I saw a nice 8 point with a scrubby salad bowl  rack 6 point and tiny 6 point showed himself earlier in the evening.It wasn`t a total loss getting to see the 8 point about 80 yards away and he never detected me.

Some of you guys I know are heavy into predator hunting up north.I would like to hear some of you guys tactics.I use a cedar scent  and fox piss as cover scents.What do you guys use up in the north country.Most of my shots occur inside 300 yards with the majority inside 100 yards.How do you guys work in the wide open country?Just curious and any input is appreciated.I have started trying to teach a 17 year old kid who lives down the road how to call.He told me he has been hunting 20 times or more calling and has never even seen a yote.I am trying to teach him patience and to stay off his call so much.He thought he should call continuously because the guy who sold him the call at the sporting goods store was a "master" and told him to.I took him with me two weeks ago and I see we are gonna have to work on his ability to sit still and be quiet.He fidgets like a kid in a candy store and cant be still for 5 minutes..Look forward to some of you other fellas tactics and such....Gene

Thanks Bojon..He is a good kid.I have finally gotten him to where he would rather grab his stuff and go hunting than play his Play Station.He is doing good, has some trouble with noise discipline but overall for a 11 year old kid I cant complain.He`s always loved to fish as we live on a river/creek but it`s taken a while with hunting.

Them derned Play station things are the worst things ever invented for kids.They should be outlawed.Maybe soon his will break and he`ll spend more time in the woods..Good to see ya Bojon.

Timber, you'r right about those dang playstations being addictive.  Our friends 6 year old has one and seems like he never gets off the thing.

And that 17 year old will need to learn not to blow that call so much.  Just a bit to get the yote's attention and make em curious.

Wish I could give you some load data for the 223, but...   Went to the range yesterday with 30 rounds of freshly loaded vmax and sierra, and none of the cases would fit the rifles chamber.  I tried each one, but the bolt handle would not turn down to close the bolt.  When I got home I checked my resizing die in the press.  It left just a smidge clearance between the shellholder.  Turned it down and resized a couple of the primed cases, and they fit the rifle easily.  Dang, now I've got to resize all 200 cases and take apart the 30 loaded rounds.    At least I was just at the range, and not out hunting.  And my 308 was working very good, so it wasn't a total loss. 

I hope another yote shows himself to ya one of these evenings.  Maybe Cody will take a shot at it.    

That is tough luck on them 223 rounds GR.I planned to buy them dies this week but procrastinated as usual.There is a gunshow next weekend in Belton,it`ll give me a good reason to go.I hope the kid will get him one.I haven`t taken him the last two times I went calling as he was busy with some of his stuff with friends.I`d sure like to see him dust one with his .243 Win

I need to get me a Hornady loading manual.Hornady used to give load info out on the web.I don`t know if they still do or not.I have a Hodgdon manual that is excellent and a Sierra manual which is good but a Hornady manual is needed.

As far as using a .223 Rem on coyotes.I do not deal in any kind of pelt trade but here is a pic from last year what it looks like when a yote is hit with a .308 Win.
