Hey guys, what can you tell me about the .357 Maximum? My dad is probably going to get one from a friend and from looking at the ballistics it seems like it would make a good replacement for the .45 LC scattergun. Not sure about barrel length, but it is a Ruger Super Blackhawk.

NH;

This was a specialty gun.  The reason they had a very short run from Ruger was that they started cutting the topstrap in fairly short order.  Take a good look at the one that your dad is thinking about.  Pull the cylinder & look at the topstrap just above the gap between the barrel & cylinder.

They are rare, two year production only from Ruger, & collectable though.  Whereas a standard Blackhawk is worth about $225.00 nowdays, the maxi is worth over $500.00.  Depending on condition, of course, in both examples.

I had a contender barrel rechambered to 357 Maxi by Mike Bellm. It was a lot of fun. I was pushing 180gr remington jhp's to 1700fps. Long range accuracy was outstanding.
It was especially fun to shoot near dark. Touching off the pile of 2400 I'd stuffed into that maxi case would produce a pumpkin sized fireball.
