Ron, it was a pleasure to meet you in person this past weekend. I wish we could have spent more time, but business was pressing, and I did end up getting more orders. I hope we're able to get together again when we both aren't working!

ric, same back at ya! soon after you left, i had a variety of artists, board members and other rich society types come in and pass the time. the more of them i got to know, the happier i was to be a part of it!

I'm sure we can all get along though - Only problem I have with Texas is that, after having driven through miles and miles of nothin' but miles and miles of Texas... Well it sure seems to me that they could cut it up and make about 4 GOOD states out of it!

Actually, I think that when Texas joined the Union, it reserved the right to sub-divide itself.  Remember, Texas was another nation that volunteered to enter the U.S. & the terms & conditions of entering weren't just cut & dried.  IF I recall correctly, Texas could divide itself into 5 states.

Anybody with a degree in history want to comment on that one?

Waksupi;  ZZ Top & Ernest Tubb are both Texas originals.  E.T.'s problem is related to the futile attempts to produce music.  That being said, at least he wasn't a quitter.

I just gotta take a minute and remark that I am duly IMPRESSED!  You are indisputeably CORRECT...Texas was indeed a republic prior to becoming a state of these here United States of America...One of the agreements agreed upon by both entities was that Texas could, if it so desired, divide itself into as many a 5 distinct states and it also retained its public lands.

Ol' Sam Houston, the transplanted Tennessean, was a bit of a cagy ol' feller and did some rather hard bargining behind the scenes. 

Now, seeing as how you are more than a 'closet' historian.....see if you can tell me of the Texas Ranger that had a very famous revolver names after him.....which, by the way, was the most powerful revolver caliber in existance until the advent of the 44 S&W Magnum........I will send you a coupla cans of ROTEL'S 'HOT' CHOPPED TOMATOES AND CHILI'S"(goes into chili fixin's instead of tomato sauce) if you can provide the correct answer..........!

While my first instinct was to think "Walker Colt," my gut tells me that it was prob'ly the Patterson. Am I anywhere close?

Kansan--you shoudda gone with your "instinct" and not your "gut"!  It was indeed Samuel Hamilton Walker 1817-1847. In 1844 Walker was with Captain John C (Jack) Hay's company of Texas Rangers and participated in the battle of Walker's Creek near the Pedernales River in central Texas. During the engagement some 15 rangers using the new Colt revolvers(Patterson) successfully defeated about 80 Comanches. In 1846 Walker visited with Colt and proposed some improvements to the Patterson.  Colt later credited Walker for the design improvements.  The Colt "Whitneyville" Walker revolver was a monster firearm and not designed to be worn on the person--special holsters were designed to fit on the pommel of the saddle where they were readily available.  Until the advent of the Remington 44 Magnum, the Walker Colt was the most powerful handgun in existance.  Samuel Walker was killed in the battle of Huamantla.  His final resting place is at the Odd Fellows' Cemetary in San Antonio, Texas.  He was 30 years old at the time of his death.

Well, I reckon it just means that I'd rather get shot in the "instinct" by a Walker than to get shot in the gut by a Paterson...

The Walker may have been the most powerfull revlolver before the 44 Mag but it is a pipsqueak compared to some of the British made Howda (sp?) handguns carried by British officers in India. These tiger killers were made in 6 boreand I believe even 4 bore.

Speaking about Colts, did you guys know that Samuel Colt was left handed and that is why you load the Colt peacemaker/1873 on the right side, so then you can hold it with your shooting hand, if you are properly synchronized, and load with you empty hand?

NH, you've been fed a line of BS that I have heard gunwriters repeat over and over. Sam Colt might have been left handed, for all I know, but this is closer to the fact.  The Colt SA was designed as a military weapon, for use by mounted troops. Cavalry doctrine at the time still considered the saber as the primary weapon, and the handgun in a secondary role. The saber was worn on the left side, to allow access for the strong hand (right). The handgunb was worn in a cross draw holster on the right waistband, butt forward. This was to allow weak hand (left) access and use. The gun was designed with left hand use in mind, according to military doctrine. Nothing more.

Besides, Sam Colt died in 1862. Unless he reached beyond the grave, I doubt he had much influence in the final design of the Model P.

I can waksupi... I just hold the gun in my left hand, open the gate with my right, use my index finger to push on the cartridge ejector, and spin the cylinder with my right handed thumb.
