what wildcat or non-commercial cartridge would you like to see legitimized?

for me, it would be a 6.5 pill on a .30/06 case. i would buy that TOMORROW!

How about a 9.3x63 Ruger . Available in the all new Ruger m77mk2 Express LR with a 22" barrel. Available factory loadings would be a 286 grain A-Square Dead Tough bullet at about 2300 fps would be about perfect. Now that would be one heck of a combo! Now with a brand new Zeiss 1.75-4x32 with 3-6" of eye relief would be just peachy. That is the $20 version of course .

Well, the 358 sta is a lot of shell for most plains game, like the zebra and the wildebeast.  Both zebra and wildebeast are actually large animals way above deer, and in my experience are tough to kill for their size.  But The 338 winchester and the 340 Weatherby are perfect for them.  It kicks like the 375 H&H but can't be used on public lands for dangerous game.  Mountaineer I don't see who who buy enough to make it even close to commerically viable.  The 358 Norma went down the tubes and it was more versatile than the STA.

Actually had a Husquvarna 358 Norma mag in my hands one time and didn't buy it.  Kick my as% when I think of it.

Hi MOUNTAINEER  >>  Checked out the pics.  Nice.  I've talked to a couple folks shooting the .358 STA.  Not an unsatisfied word to be had.  "Powerhouse" seems to be the most popular term used to describe this cartridge.  There's no way I'm gonna wait for it to become a standardized round.  I'll have to get something put together much sooner then that !!!

Well both Klallen and Bear know more about this plains game stuff than I do.  Hell, I can't even get around to hunting all our critters much less African game!

From what I've read and see though, the 358 STA is a heck of a caliber though better and worser (is that a word???) calibers exist.

One caliber that I think has fallen from the spotlight that I really like AND USE is my little 257 Roberts.  I wish more people would pick up on it.  I really like it for most all my deer hunting.  Plenty of power for most of my deer hunting and an accurate little bugger to boot.  Heck, when I was testing handloads, I found that it would group about 1 inch 5 shot groups with just about anything.  Could've been the exception of a gun but that little Ruger 77 of mine shoots dang fine.

I bought one of the first batch of Ruger 77 in 257 roberts "200th yer of americna freedom".  the Roberst was really bet up by the 1960s gun writers in their rush to promote the new 243 and 244.

The Roberts is really a true varmit and deer rifle.  I've dumped lots of whitetails with the 117gr Hornady.

I even like the thumb safety on my olde 77.

I'm gonna have to vote for the real thing, the .257 SuperRoberts, otherwise not known as the .257WSM.  Since it's not produced ya know.

Taz;  Look no further than the 6.5 Schuler.  The case is, as is the .30-06, a derivative of the 8X68S 8mm Mauser.  In this instance, it's not been cut to 63mm, but left at 68mm.  It's ballistically the .264 Winmag without a belt.  Or there's the 6.5X61 Mauser.  Showing a factory load of 2906 fps with a 139 gr bullet.

sounds good, 900f. only problem is that i haven't seen rifles or ammunition in those configurations down at scheels, or even wally-world!

Oh gosh guys forget all those tiny puny cartridges, "Just get a 7mm RUM or Warbird and be done with it." . I partially agree, but sub the 7mm RUM and Warbird with the .404 Jeffrey and the .458 Winchester Magnum .
