I haven't been shooting my .45 that much since I've been a little worried about running out of components to load more ammo.

I buy mixed small and large once fired brass and haven't loaded any of the small primer brass. I have a few coffee cans of it. I don't have any small pistol primers and it doesn't look like any will be available any time soon.

I do have quite a few small rifle primers. I have been doing some research and it seems that about the only difference in pistol and rifle primers is either the hardness or thickness of the cups. The rifle primers are harder or thicker depending on the brand.

I loaded 20 cases with small rifle primers and went to the range. I didn't set up my chronograph but all 20 of them cycled the action just fine and I couldn't tell any difference between them and the large primed ones. Also the ejected brass landed on the ground in roughly the same place as everything else I shot.

I'm not suggesting anyone else do this. I am just reporting what I did and my results.

I've done it the other way. seemed to group fine.

Interesting experiment Wing, never thought to make that comparison & test. I don't have any small primer .45acp brass anyway but interesting to read of your test. Very little shooting here in the cold & snow country so no strain on my components supply either handgun or rifle.
