After taking an afternoon to go out and shoot a little I got home and was going to clean my rifle. Just getting started I noticed my cleaning rod is bent. Not real bad and I straightened it enough to finish cleaning my gun but I think it's probably time for a new one. My old one is a stainless rod with no coating and a handle with a swivel handle on one end. Nothing fancy but it's worked good for at least 20 years. I'm looking at the new ones and they now have carbon fiber rods. They look pretty good. What do you think of them? I don't think i would ever permanently bend one but are they too flexable? Just my spin on cleaning rods. 1960, started with mil surplus one piece rod. then went to a 3 piece Al rod. then one piece brass. 20 years ago I invested in a Dewey one piece 36" 22 rod. It is steel inside. I do lots of cleaaning, rod is perfect for me. I got the 22 rod to use in everything I own. It works 6mm, 7mm, 30, 338, 416 all fine. The plastic/nylon coating means even if the rod 'buckles' a little in the bore, only soft mateials will touch the rifling, no damage. Now some of my rifles have terible design, (esp CZ rimfires), and parts of the action will scratch the black nylon rod coating. The 17 cal rod in carbon is sweet. Has a little tip thingy to allow the use of all our 22 sized cleaning goodies. They are springy and strong but like all things, not indestructible. Other then an oily rag, mine rarely see a rod. Every couple years maybe. I cant really see how a 3' rod in any configuration or material would be a poor investment....well....fiberglass might be a bad choice. ------------- ...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt! |

Well way back when....several decades ago...I remember my dad using a straightened out clothes hanger for a cleaning rod. Since then I graduated to the 3 pc aluminum rods in the nice metal containers from "OUTERS" that had bore cleaner, oil, bore brush, patch tip holder & cleaning patches inside. Subsequently in later years I too joined the ranks of modern cleaning rods. I have some Dewey coated rods, stainless rods. All of one piece design. Then I even have a wooden jointed rod for shotguns. My take from the replies is that any cleaning rod will work. Even a straightened out coat hanger. I remember my Grandpa using a coat hanger but he wasn't a gun guy so I figured that probably was the only thing he had laying around. I got the carbon fiber rod. It seems pretty good but I haven't used it yet. I don't clean my guns as often as I should but I think I might clean them more often than D does. I I have Google searched a few innocent things over the years that I'm glad my grandkids weren't sitting on my lap. One of them was Baldor electric motors. That one almost embarrassed me. I was needing a Baldor (brand) electric motor for the car wash. They are really expensive here in town so I thought I would look on line for a better price. I'm not sure what "Baldor" means other than a brand of motor but when I googled it a bunch of porn sites came up. In the 1960s I use to use and design with Baldor motors. Good equipment, usually 2 hp and less. I googled it and all I could find was motors, and old memories. But not I understand. 30 years ago Dick's sporting goods wanted a web site, you can guess what came up!!!! My advise was change your name, they didn't like that advise. Now 30 years later they changed to Field & Stream...much better.Amazon had a similiar problem; wild hits when googled.
