OK it's about time to kinda get the feel of the waters.
At one point I thought it would be fun to camp right at our shooting area, then thought, Dang the extra work of camping/eating and maybe people would rather have a hot shower a bed ext...
Now, I'm kinda thinking We should base out of Great Falls rather then Big Sandy.
People coming in on different days and times would be easier.
We will just have to spend the gas. And In the event the dogs don't cooperate or Rain or any change of plan we would not be tied to a very small town for alternatives.
I do think we need to get out of the old Ponderosa in down town.
SO many nicer places with as much to do, I don't know prices but we should be able to get close.
Pool options, food options, bar choices ext.
Anyway, That's kind of my direction of thought.
Maplehill is vacationing on the way over and back. He is bringing his family, wife and 2 sons, they will need a motel.
Food will have to be on the road multiple times , there is a restaurant in B S and Loma, or most other small burgs we shoot near. Lets get the ball rolling as to what we need and want.

Looks like I'll be flying.  Motel is good.  I sort of like the downtown area as I can walk to aany number of eateries and places.  I don't use pools so that isn't needed by me.  Seems that a good number of the guys  smoke. so a smoking area might be good, many hotels are now no smoking except for the parking lot.

On the road lunches and breakfasts work fo me.

Just want to avoid Missouri River Diner, if you want pancakes.....they traditionally burn on one side, black, then put it on the underside.  need a steak knife to cut it.  But you can keep enjoying it all day.

Comfort Inn 1120  9th street is close, reasonably priced, with breakfast, and a pool  ($85).

I've also stayed at the Arvon Hotel (historic)  more $$ but very nice,  It is above the Celtic Cowboy resturant also a great place to eat.  Don't think they have a pool.

Also stayed  at the Wingate at 1000 9th Ave S.  Nice $$ indoor pool.
I don't spent much time in GF Motels, so anytthing clean is fine with me.  Liked the indoor garage at the old place, could leave my gun in cars.

Many motels are presently CLOSED.  hopefully they will be open by then.

also hopefully I'll be ready to fly on a reliable plane.

Just thoughts

I can't set a date for our departure/arrival, yet. We are waiting on several things TBD, when/if school will start again, will there be a graduation ceremony, my youngest niece graduates, will the travel ban/restrictions still be in place, will the National Parks be open, lots of questions for me yet. Hopefully we know more in the next 2 weeks. If school reopens and/or a graduation (I don't think it will) we won't be there for the big gathering, that is scheduled for 6/27. Also, we plan to check out the Badlands NP, Rushmore, Little Bighorn and possibly Glacier NP, so if they don't reopen we will rethink our tour. I have a feeling they will (tax $$). Also, I need to make sure there are no travel restrictions still in affect. Work can make me "self quarantine" if I travel out of state if these rules are still in place. I feel very confident we will get out there sometime this summer to at least meet up with D and shoot at some P-dogs. My boys are absolutely stoked to go out there and my wife is an American history teacher and the westward expansion is one of her main topics, she has always wanted to check out the west. Don't worry about finding us a spot to stay, we are pretty easy to please, we'll find a motel somewhere. I truly hope this BS is subsided and we can see what we want to see and meet up with you all. In the mean time, a new cap has been secured on my truck and we are shooting the 22 CFs with some regularity, and I might have found a spot to shoot 300yds today...gonna talk to the guy about it.

D thanks for getting this thing started....gives us all time to think.

maple, this being your first time to MYGAWDS, you should know it is very informal...no set rules except to have fun and enjoy the comradary.  and as always all are welcome.

I am planning on being there but things could change by then.

I'm not too hard to please as far as motels go either. I'll be happy anywhere.

Just let me know where everyone wants to stay and I'll try to make a reservation.

I would prefer to stay somewhere that has nice people working at the front desk. I'd hate to get yelled at for knocking a 500 count box of plastic spoons all over the floor of the lobby.

I didn't think it was that big of a deal. The guy that worked at the motel didn't agree.

At least that was the impression I got when he told me to leave them alone he would pick them up. LOL

There you go!!!Clap
I have stand up sticks but prefer sit down sticks.
If I plant my BUTT on the ground I don't wobble back and forth.

I only sit down when I have my 'carry chair'  which is the usual thing.  If I sit down on the ground, as military shooting position...I can't get up...... easily.  Some days not at all, and I don't want to be mistaken for a fat gopher rolling around.

I shot my cape buffaalo, and a lot of African game in the military sitting position, very accurate (NO STICKS).  But in Africa, on two safaris, no guide nor bearers ever say anyone shot sitting.  But they could no believe how accurate I was with my 416 mag from sitting.

Well, the hoax is starting to look like  a past stupid idea.

MT appears to be reopening....Hooray.

Presently, the rule is "A 14-day quarantine remains in effect for travelers arriving from out of state for non-work related reasons."

Hoping this will be gone by this date next month.  It seems to only being enforced now at airports.  My present plan is to fly.  With a plan B to drive it (ugh, 4 days, 10 hours a day; 1850 miles).

I have a few hurdles here myself. It doesn't look like I will be there for the 27th, there is going to be something of a graduation here, but will hopefully be able to meet up with D when we get there. Also, work has stated that if I travel out of state I have to quarantine 14days at home on my own time when I return. I have the union working on that...it is stupid for so many reasons, I don't have room to type it all here. Things are supposed to start opening up here Friday, slowly. We got a little over a month. Fingers crossed!!

Glacier will not be opening on the 15th... and no date has been given for the rescheduled opening as of today. I will know before the general public will hear anything and keep you posted. I don't have info on any other parks, though.

The Ponderosa has changed hands once again, drove by today and saw a Travelodge by Wyndham sign hung and the looks of serious remodeling going on.

Thanks for this update. Glacier is one of the spots we wanna visit. I know you can visit Rushmore, but the building are closed. We are members of a Wyndham club so we may check that place out if it is open.

Why the Staybridge????  Cheapest single is $170 per night.

La Quinta Inn  by Wyndham Great Falls= $92+ per night.

Wingate by Wyndham Great Falls- = $71+

Super 8 by Wyndham= $65+

Travelodge by Wyndham= $59+

If I can save $100 per night, think about how much beer I caan buy for my friends!  maybe save enough to get a rifle at Sheels or North 40.

Star trek transporter  is my preferred way....beam me up Scotty!

OK you out of townees.
Any consensuses as to where you want to stay ?
garou_22 Will you need a room too?
Does any one know how to get a hold of "Tom"?
Last I herd he could not get in to this board for what ever reason.
"Steve" will be with me.
I think we need to base out of great falls, camping would be fun but a Nightmare to get to happen sorry.
FOOD
We should be able to eat in a restaurant like Denny's by mid June.
Or McDonald's if Denny's is not 24 hours by then.
I will bring cold cuts, buns, pop and water for lunch in the field.
Sorry no bunny burritos this year.
Then food back in GF for dinner.
Transportation can be worked out later, Maybe we will have to leave the out of state licence trucks at the motel, quarantine thing maybe.
It looks like Hill and his crew will not make it when we are all here, sounds like they will be here around the 30th. I promised We would save 3 prairie dogs the the five of them can take turns shooting at them.
Any thoughts and tentative itinerary's lets hear them.
Gota make this work...
DON'T forget the "State use permits"
It's all done over the computer now I think, have to print it off at home as of now.
Anything else?

Looks like most of the sights will be open. My whole crew have never been further west of Toledo OH so it is all going to be an adventure for them.
