In winter what do you think is the best temp and time of day for squirrel hunting?

-2 here and I figure the squirrels have their tails wrapped around their face.  but is is very bright sun.

We don't have enough trees for a good squirrel population, but when I am in the mountains I see them everywhere. I've never noticed the weather making a difference.

When you are not hunting them...they are everywhere.   Take a 22 and walk into heavy woods and they all disappear.   they are little tree climbing mind readers.

Wing, I'm thinking your rats and my rats are not the kind bear is hunting. Ours are more like big mice that clime trees.
Bears rats are like Prairie dogs in the trees...Big smile

I grew up eating grey squirrel, when I moved up here, I found besides being way smaller pine/red squirrels, they don't taste near as good. I don't see them out much in winter, they keep nest to stash run pretty short. They often stash pine cones, near tree base, so it's in tree well, during winter.

Some of the towns have imported grey squirrels, but neighbors don't let you hunt them.

We have Red, gray, and fox squirrels.  and many grey squirrels  are solid black.

Being inside Penn's Woods we do have lots of these squirrels and also the Rocky  rat, flying squirrels.

I eat the fox (largest) and greys and red ones also.

I cook them all the same.  clean, soak in salt water, cook in pressure cooker for 15 minutes.  then pull all meat off bones.  this meat is them added to either my chicken soup recipe or my chicken stew recipe, of my chicken salad recipe!  tastes like chicken so I treat it the same.

The red squirrels around here are pretty small. I see them a lot while hunting whitetails in the Black Hills. I've never specifically hunted them but I did shoot one one time with a .270 when I was sneaking up on a group of deer and he kept chattering so loud the deer looked up and saw me and ran off.
