What's the deal with this? I put in for app, just in case but also saw this on MTFWP's site, in regs.

Persons wishing to hunt Sandhill Cranes in the Central Flyway outside of the special drawing permit areas must obtain a free license available from all statewide Fish, Wildlife & Parks offices and license providers. Bag limit: 3 daily and 9 in possession. Open Season: • Sept 29 ‑ Nov 25

So if a person was going to be down, by Yellowstone or powder river hunting deer and they saw crane and had free license, they could shoot one?

If I read regs correctly, you don't need fed duck stamp, for cranes, just like doves, just state migratory bird license?

You can also use lead shot, outside of WFMA areas, just like upland birds and doves?

I got my 3rd tag.
They only give out 10 tags where I apply...

NOPE, there eat grain/ wheat, like a goose, sometimes with geese.
You can spot and stock like deer or decoy like geese.
OR pass shoot like ducks.

Since I put in and was drawn for Ovando area, I guess, I should dust off the bow and maybe pick up a deer or elk too. I'm thinking it's a small area and they give out 40 tags, there must be cranes in pastures, along river.

I'm down at Townsend ,Canyon ferry , and only 10 permits given.
What we found was you need to find where there roosting and get them as they fly to feed. The roost in the water or in tall trees along side the water but there NOT water birds. They spend most the day out in the grain fields or along side small creeks, there also eat salamanders and frogs.
It starts in a month you need to go on a road trip and do a little door knocking or scouting.Big smile

  Dang!
We did the 3hour drive , the mile walk .
AND watched about 50 crane take off in small groups of 2 and 3 and fly across the river straight away from us.
By 8:30 there was not a crane to be seen.
We did some spot and stock hunts but in short stubble and cut alfalfa there was little hope. We did get permission to hunt the other side of the river next time out but it's about a 2 mile walk in ,in the dark. We'll get them in a few week plus there should be more birds down.
