I live in a state without any Moose.

So I travel, and have shot some Moose (plural mice?).

like all years, I put in for Maine Moose tags.  chances are slim, but a great hunt.

Anyone want to put in and join me.  Moose hunting equires some 'help', atv, winch, muscle.  so I always get a guide/outfitter.  if you get drawn a  tag  and get an outfitter your chance to get a good bull is 90+%.

Do it your self is tougher, but I'd tag along (little muscle help from me, unfortunately today)

BEAR.

WOW!
How tempting.
BUT I'll have to take at least a two year rain check.
With the multiple  thousand dollar insurance payments a month I'm a bit tight on disposable income.CryCryCryCry

I'll put you on my list.

Must tell you this is thick hunting...lots of vegatation.  Often times you can hear them walking in creeks coming closer.  In thick stuff, even the game prefes to walk in a water course without  to many trees.   shots are usually close, under 30 yards.  One wants a big heavy cartridge to drop them in their tracks; sucks love to run to a pond, making retreival difficult.

On occasion we will hunt some logging cut areas, range can then be longer 200 yds.

A 45-70 would be a pretty good compromise!!!Wink

.....suckered me in for a draw pack. I never win these silly things, but why not right. I believe the H&H will do nicely.

Boy that's a great temptation bear.................

Here is just one example of fully guided hunt in Maine for moose...out of my price range tho.....there are many others listed too, this is just one example...nice pics to show what they can offer...

So Bear how could someone compete (in the sense of success in getting a moose) with a self guided hunt in Maine? It would take lots of research to prepare for such a trip....finding a good area for one thing. Ideally it would be nice to be able to pick an area and get there to actually stomp around & check out the hunting site. Are there access roads to the Big Woods like in most states for trucks to get into moose hunting areas? A Maine moose hunt is a dream for lots of folks I'd bet....me for one.

IF...If.... you get drawn for a tag expect about 10-12 guide services to contact you.  they pay to get a report within minutes of the draw...early bird gets the worm.

Costs, quality will vary.  But the sucess is near 100% If you can hack it.  I can do almost anything for a moose...pain doesn't matter.

I've hunted with 2 of the maine outfitters, both excepent family operations, reasonable.
