Fella's;
Some of the members of 2016 MYGAWDS raised the idea of a
winter coyote get together this winter. As the time has
come, D & I have been kicking around the time frame.
We've come up with either a couple of days in the
December 26 - 31 week, or something just after the first
week in January, say the week of the 9th - 15th.
We know that the results are going to be pretty much
weather dependent, and travel plans are best made well in
advance, two mutually exclusive goals it seems. But,
who's in & who's out? I'll start working on getting
permission into as many areas of private land as I can.

December 12th-16th time frame is workable, and should be before the Christmas rush. Either time I'll have to get a day off and arrange for someone to pick up my little granddaughter from school, but there again do able.
Jan 10th -14th should be arrange able also the weather is only going to be a seed under our denchers this time of year. I DONT use "chains" on the suburban and am hard pressed to strap on the snow shoes. -30* just is not as much fun as it used to be...

Just got a Giant pack of "hand", "foot", and "body" Warmers today, By them in bulk now.

D back when I started hunting winters (1961) I bought a
Jon E hand warmer, still have 2 or 3 someplace. they
used lighter fluid and stunk terrible and could burn
thru you coat if not careful.
Today's powdered charcoal burners a big improvement.

We sure can get distracted can't we.
Sorry CB.
Back to arranging a coyote hunt.
Any chance we would call out a Bob cat?
I don't have a trapping license at this time.
For Bobs there is a dead line to get on of November 1st.
You can only shoot one If you have a trapping license.
There $20 for residents and for land owners there $1.
If there a chance I'd like to shoot one...

anyone have any preference about mid-week, over the

Boy was out for whitetails yesterday. Got a doe.....and a yote. Saw a few more as well. No calls, just sitting at the edge of a brush patch between some fields........we gotta get some call setup thingy and go get some of these critters. I really wish I was joining you guys. Not just for the hunting and socializing, but also for the libations and education on how to get them properly.
BTW, this farm is only a few miles from where I work and keep hearing them calling every evening. Sucks that I have permission to hunt these areas and not a clue how to do it. I can't wait to hear how this expedition works out and hope it goes well. Maybe I'll hit you guys up for tips.
Almost forgot, he was using his Weatherbey MK V standard length in 30-06 with the synthetic stock and 180gr. accubonds. Shot was inside a hundred yards, quartering towards him at a dead run. Placement was directly behind the shoulder halfway down and exited out the opposite side at the back rib. Somehow missed the punch and by the looks of the exit hole, expansion must've been minimal.....apparently it just was overkill for the doe as the yote fared much worse with the accubond. Practically split the dog in half. Not a good idea to use them on critters you want the hide from. Farmer says there is a solid black one running in the pack and has hopes to see it shot and mounted. I think the boy is gonna except that mission.

congratulations to son.
Yep, those 180gr '06 loads are the most popular with
Pennsylvania hunters really are tooo much. Unless
they hit bone most just go straight thru with little
damage. For years I would help track those 180gr
deer.
Our eastern 'otes are like a different species; I
suspect it is the great difference in terrain. West
they respond to calls and come in fast with long
distances. So much food and cover here in the east
they are reluctant to come to call from any distance
and seem to circle slowly.

JSG;
Uh, for mulies, which tend to run larger than whitetails,
my .30-06 load uses a 150 grain bullet. There's no need
to go any heavier. The old saw about "bucking brush" is
mythical in my opinion. Modern construction bullets can
do just fine. Picking the shot & placing it properly is
far more important than any "brush bucking" supposed
ability.
You can push a 150 to 3000 fps in an ought-6,
particularly in a strong action like the Weatherby, but
there's no need to. Anything in the high 28's & 2900's
will do just fine. I don't think you need to consider
400 yard shots any too much in Penn's Woods.

I agree that 150's and 165's are about prime. He had them for bear as it was in an overlapping season in this WMU. Guess he figured better to be bigger then not enough if the scenario changed direction.

|

D, the problem is not just bullet weight in the '06.
Most PA woods hunters like factory 180 gr '06. these
are designed for elk and moose and just don't expand
in even the biggest whitetail. So they are like
sticking a deer with a 30 caliber sword...no
expansion, no shock value.
I've tried with hundreds of PA deer hunters,
explaining that the 150 gr would be many times better.
But they are like CB says...wed to big deer need big
bullets that are 'brush busters'. Heavy jacketed
bullets just don't belong in the hands of the average
deer hunter.

I shoot 150 gr SST or Interlock in my 308 around 2830
fps. It is accurate and spares my shoulder - especially
in a Kimber 84. Never seen a need for anything faster

Bachekermooni & Bear
Kinda looking like winter all over the state.
That's NOT a good thing. -20* here this morning. By Saturday it may be as high as +25*. We got 8" of new fluffy white crap this storm the wind could become a nasty factor in our Plans. At this point in my mind If we get a Chinook It will make it warmer but worse.
Maybe another storm coming in on Sunday, Not expecting as much snow as the last but wind may come with it and THAT is BAD news. We will get out and call but it WILL be a very hard hunt, just the way it looks right now. I'm defiantly planning on full whites and my full winter under stuff. AND I dug out my snow shoes , YUK, even in 5" of snow they help a LOT.
Lets cross our fingers and hope for the best and plan for the worst .

Well, I'm certainly confused now. You need a permit of some source even to shoot non-game animals on state land? But you're kidding about needing a permit to snow-shoe on public lands, right? But I can still shoot 'em on my own place, right?

OK I'll go real slow.
In order to Snow shoe or anything ,on state trust land every one needs a "Use permit".
No permit of any kind ,needed to shoot coyotes or gophers anyplace.
BUT IF you have a license to hunt or fish anything It comes WITH a Use permit to be ON and hunt and fish on state lands...
SO yes you can shoot them on your place with out anything BUT if "Your" place encompass state land that YOU don't lease then YOU need a use permit??? clear as mud ?

Thanks. That's starting to help. I KNOW there's no state land in my land, BUT ...
If I have to have a "Use permit" to do "anything" on state trust land, but I don't need a permit of any kind to shoot coyotes and gophers anyplace, do I need a permit to shoot gophers on state land because it's "anything" and it's someplace, or do I not need a permit because I'm shooting gophers?

Cascade;
OK, I'll try. You do not need a license to shoot gophers
or hunt coyotes. BUT, if you do those activities on
state land, you have to have the use permit.
It's a catch-all to generate income from state land.
Presumably if you stepped onto state land to take a leak
you'd be in violation without the permit. To do anything
on the land you need the permit, but not necessarily a
license.

Ahhhh. OK, think I've got it now. And the first hunting license of any kind you buy each year also get the Use permit. I reckon I can come up with a couple extra bucks each year for that. Thx.

"Conservation includes state land permit ".
Does a $10 conservation stamp/license include a "State
land use"?

Yes it does, valid while hunting or fishing, just carry if you're out hiking and say you're hunting non-game (IE: gophers, coyote, raccoon, skunk ect) if asked and you're covered.

can make a quick white cover-up with a white bed sheet,
cutting a head hole dead center. some white cord for a
sinch.

Careful with the white cord and don't sinch it up to tight Bear.
If you don't have snow shoes on big deal, still very do able in normal boots.
Just a little less drag on an old mans legs on top of the snow.
It's not like we have 2 feet on the ground, 5" most places . The wind blows it in to big piles in the open spots grass is showing .
The gray cover ups will be just fine.

Here is my plan.
I'll pick up the night callers at there hotel at 5 PM.I have to take the granddaughter to a DR appt so that's as early as I can do it.
You have a plan to get from the airport to your room ?
I'm heading out in the morning to check out the roads and find / mark parking places for calling.
It is only 15 minutes out to where I have in mind.
We don't NEED snow shoes there just a bit easer to walk in even in 5" of snow.
I find stark white like a sheet to white and the UV's are bad, So somethin gray is way better, snow camo is not white.
Anything as long as it is not BLUE is fine .Nothing in the wilds of Montana is Blue! Half of your body in in the snow sitting on the ground anyway.
Something to sit on like a foam pad is nice and lets you sit longer and sit still. I have a folded up army wool blanket I have used .
Looking forward to learning some spotlighting techniques.
I have no Idea the plan for Friday yet, or Saturday, Kinda weather related .

I ran out to where I plan on night calling to see how the roads are and the snow load.
Roads are good for now. it would not take a lot of wind to change that...
Coyote tracks every place all fresh, we got 2" of snow last night. I got out there right at shooting light so there from coyotes active at night, looks good.
I did make t sets no one came in but had multiple answers.

I have now secured permission to get on another neighbor's

bring a 1000-yard rifle along :-)

You need to make the picture way smaller to get it to load.
Or host it on Photobucket or someplace similar

Bach;
You shouldn't need a 1000 yard gun. It's highly unlikely
you'll want to walk any distance with one either.
Particularly if you're in snow of any depth. A good gun
with a bullet that's not subject to the wind is the best
bet. High B/C in a walking varminter. I use the 6mm
Remington with a 75 grain V-Max for those reasons. The
scope is only a 3-9 Loopy, but that gets the job done at
any reasonable range.
