This board is a great place, but it is slowly dying.
The name certainly doesn't help. But this is a
difficult place to get your first post.

The way it works is: we have no security sign in.
Most sites have a magic number that is written in
funny type and moves. You need to recognize this
changing key number and use it to sign in for new
memberships. We can't do that with our present
software. So hackers that will steal your email
address and place ads on here are constantly trying to
get on our system, as new members.

To combat this CB and I personally review each
possible new member, and delete about 150 new hackers
each day (some more some less). Between CB and me we
review these possible new members about 4 plus times a
day. But this is still a delay for someone trying to
get on.

This also takes up time from CB and me, which we have
been doing for years, and don't mine too much the
sacrifice for BSB.

Typically, one surfs the net and finds an interesting
post on a new site. So they want to respond with
their opinion, etc. They want to do it RIGHT THEN.
If they try to join that minute and can't post, they
really never come back. this is how we lose potential
new members.

For 5 years we have lost more members than we gain.
We are slowly going downhill.

Personally, this place is important to me and others.
We need to up grade the software so new people can get
on immediately. This will cost some annual fees.

I think we all need to PM Ron ( TasunkaWitko   )and
tell him the annual amount we think BSB is worth to us
and how much we are willing to contribute each year to
keep BSB up and running on new software..

BEAR;

Do you have any idea what such annual software fees might
be for the site?

I agree, however, as with all things it has a double edge. If you start charging an annual fee, the fee will scare away new members. I know this because it has happened to me. I have saw some sites that I thought I would like until I saw a fee and I left and never went back. As unsavory as it sounds having ads are more acceptable than fees. Most people would rather put up with a few ads than pay an fee to be on a site.

The best way would be to find a sponsor or two that would be willing to front the costs in exchange for some exclusive ads on the site.

No matter what we do I think it will be a change for the better because we really do need some new blood here.

Not advocating any one way to save the board....bear makes a good case and I'd like to save the site too......so....

I can see MEH's reasoning that an immediate FEE could scare away a potential member...so...one idea...if a fee is needed how about letting some new folks join right away for a trial period....then when trial is done suggest a fee to continue as member. No idea how to arrange or manage the logistics of this thought tho.

One other idea is to ask for donations but make it
voluntary.

I would be more than happy to donate to keep the BSB
site going.

On another site I go to, they have a little badge by
your name that says if you are a bronze, silver , or
gold contributer. Also, people who dont contribute
have ads down the left side of the screen. if you
donate you see no ads.

I have no idea how much it costs to have a site with
better options, but I am willing to bet that we could
raise enough money to pay for it.

I am with Wingmaster & the others, in willing to make a donation. If the powers that be for this board come up with a donation plan like...maybe a guesstimate as to how much it would cost to make the necessary UpGrades so we can get a feel for what a proper donation would be. A head count of current membership could help determine he $$ amount per member. not all members maybe able to contribute a preset amount but any amount would be a big help.
how to get $$$ to whoever can buy/arrange the needed upgrades to make this board fit into the modern world. An address to send donations to, earmarked for the upgrade of this site...

Fella's;

I'm with IBD on that. I'd have no problem kicking in the
necessary, but would like an idea of the size of the pot
that would need filling.

I've now sent a PM to Tex asking him to review & advise.
