This one shipped in 1956. Hey DD, Any idea how old the ederal Monark ammo is? It was in a box of my Grampa's stuff I got after he passed.

Keep out of the reach of children was required after 1962. Probably

When I first started carrying, it was a revolver. Now it's a semi-auto & I'm happier. I think that it conceals better and I know that it's a whole helluva lot more comfortable. More rounds available also. Not that four, five, or six, shouldn't be enough to get you out of trouble if need be. But the higher capacity pretty much goes with the territory and I don't mind it in the least. 900F ------------- Birth certificate!? He don't need no steenkink birth certificate!! |

Deaddog: I thought it was "The Gun Control Act Of 1968"
that mandated the "children" warning on ammo boxes? I guess I don't know for sure - I have just heard SO many cartridge collector types repeat that contention. I wonder how we could find out for sure? Hold into the wind VarmintGuy |

GCA of 1968 changed a lot. Needed to show drivers license to buy 22 rf ammo, and seller needed to keep record of sale (your name, etc).
GCA '68 put a lot of burden on sellers and manufactures of ammo regarding children. But I think that the marking notice about children was not specifically mandated. The industry just decided that marking would get them GCA around the stupid GCA regulations. I was 18 and bought a rem m700 308 win rifle, weeks later after the GCA took effect the same store wouldn't sell me ammo???????? I talked to the manager, told him I had 'his' rifle so why not sell me ammo. he said "give the kid the ammo". |

1964 WW came out with plastic hulls. The two boxes on the left are paper hulls. They kept the "All New Plastic" tab on for several years. DD ------------- Endeavor to persevere. |

An ample amount of research has now convinced me that a
Federal mandate in the year 1962 (nineteen hundred and sixty two) brought about the "Keep Out Of Reach Of Children" warnings on all American manufactured/sold ammunition! NOT... the Gun Control Act Of 1968 (nineteen hundred and sixty eight) like I had heard for so long. Was worth searching this out to get the CORRECT year in my head. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy |

I believe the statement “Keep out of the reach of children” came from the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) which requires precautionary labeling on the container of hazardous household products. This was the 1962 act; and they made it apply to Ammo. If you look on household chemicals bottles today you will find that same wording. Latter the Consumer Product Saferty Commission was founded under fed statute. And that specific warning was mandated by CPSC. Ammo manufacturers complied with out any screams; and they continued to place that warning. The CPSC was corrupted by anti-gun folks that urged them to outlaw handgun ammo as inherently dangerous. The CPSC at that time had jurisdiction over all product including ammo. IIRC, the CPSC discussed outlawing handgun ammo, but never did. It did hold that all ammo and even guns were within their jurisdiction. They were not ready to give up. The isssue finally hit the pro-gun people, who saw it as the first step to outlaw ammo, then guns. In the 1972 product safety act exempted firearms from the definition of “consumer products” the commission was to regulate. This was in response to the NRA and some other pro-gun lobbies Ted (you could drown in my car) Kennedy always tried to get that authority back into the CPSC power, but failed. I don't think today the WARNING is required, but ammo manufacturers just kept it on to limit their individual liability. Clearly it does no good, and no one reads it. |
