I tried it and it actually works.

How
to
 protect your
e-mail address book

A computer repairman
says this is like having
gold.

 This  is a
good thing.

I learned a computer
trick today that's really ingenious in its
simplicity.

As you may
know, when/if a worm virus gets
 into your
computer

 it
heads straight for your email address
book,

 and sends
itself to everyone in
there,

 thus
infecting all your friends and
 associates.

This trick
won't keep the virus from
getting

into
your computer,

but it
will stop it from using your address
book

to
spread further, and

it will
alert you to the fact
 that
the worm has

gotten into your
system.

Here's what
you do:

First, open
your address book and click
on

'new
contact,

 just
as you would do if you were
adding

 a
new friend to
 your list
of email addresses.

 In
the window where you would type
your

friend's first name, type
in
 'A'.

For
the
 screen
name
 or email
address

Now,
here's what you've done and why it
works:

The
'name
 'A' will
be placed at the top of your address
book

 as
entry #1.

This will
be where the worm will
start

 in
an effort to send itself to all your
friends.

 because
of the
 phony
email address you entered.

 If
the first attempt fails

 (which
it
 will
because of the phony
address),

 the
worm goes no further

 and
your
 friends
will not be infected.

Here's the
second great advantage of this
method:

 If
an email cannot be
delivered,

 you
will be notified of
 this in
your In Box
 almost
immediately

 Hence,

 you
know right away that you have the worm
virus

 in
your
 system.

 You
can then take steps to get rid of
it!

Pretty
slick huh?

If
everybody you know does
this

 then
you need not ever worry about opening mail from
friends.

DO IT
NOW
 and pass
this on to all your
friends.

I have several e-mail addresses, I started getting e-mails from one address to other addresses, from myself, I checked and had undeliverable e-mail notices there.  It was a matter of hours that I knew and cleaned virus out before it had done damage.

I don't keep contacts in e-mail address book, I keep them in word doc, I cut and paste from, so it doesn't spread.  It takes a couple more clicks to send e-mail, but address book is unavailable to virus.

FYI....THIS IS WHAT A COMPUTER WHIZ-BANG HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS SUGGESTION

"The first contact in my address book is “aaa” and has been for 5 -10 years. This email is basically true. The early exploits of this virus did just as described. If such a virus existed today, it may send a message to the whole list all at once. You would certainly get the bounced message warning. Although this may not be very effective any more, it will do no harm to add this address to your list. Today’s email programs and virus checked do so much more for email than they did way back, that you are essentially very well protected."

Viruses can and do still get through, that's why I have no contacts in my e-mail accounts, except for my other addresses.  I never send e-mails to myself, but on several occasions, I've received e-mails with myself as the sender, something had to send them.

I run daily scans and have second program, that runs weekly scans, if they can get into big computers, they can get to yours.  While keeping contact list in seperate program isn't foolproof, it provides another layer.  I also have dailup, it's harder for viruses to get downloaded on slow lines.
